Problem solved (well not, but am stuck with it). The BIOS config says the screen is 1366 max, so thats why i cant make it go any higher !!!
Indeed its a Dell. I based the screen res on what the Dell support page says for the specific config of my laptop. Based on the service tag it says it left the factory with
"Display @ 36.6cm...
Even though the 14 inch laptop panel supports 1600x900 (Dell part number MJ154) the max resolution i can pick is 1366 x 768. No higher options are shown
