Bought a new Asus laptop off Amazon, and it's coming pre-installed with Windows 10.
Should activation go smoothly if I wipe it and clean install using the Media Creation Tool? I hate manufacturer...

I'm running 8.1 Core, and not even fully updated (just found 2 Important updates available).
Also asked it on the Microsoft Community forums, and it seems that yes, it will be possible.
Microsoft has been marketing the free upgrade like crazy. But will there be an official ISO to allow us to clean install?
My main issue too, emphasis on the word exactly. I hope options are not put aside for the sake of the more simplistic interface of the Settings app.
