Well, as most desktop motherboards for Intel CPUs also support some (not all) Xeon models, it is possible that an AMD desktop motherboard also supports some Opteron models. Because the motherboard is desktop grade and not server grade, some Opteron CPU features may not be supported, but the CPU can be used for everyday (not server) computing running a desktop version of Windows such as Windows 7 and Windows 10. But it is like installing a Ferrari engine in a common car, don't expect to be as fast as a Ferrari... Also I guess it will support the NX/PAE necessary to run at least Windows 8/10 32-bit (maybe also 64-bit) so there is no need to hack the kernel. Just try installing the 32-bit version and see what happens. You can then format and try the 64-bit version. Then post results here. To find out the specs of your CPU, google it and see the AMD result. For other posters having an Intel CPU, to see the specs google it and see the Intel "ark" result. This is for my Intel 3rd generation i3 3220 CPU in my main PC (see my specs).

The Intel ARK results do point out the caveat that not all systems (i.e. motherboards, and other device and peripheral components in combination on the PC) support all the processor features available.
‡ This feature may not be available on all computing systems. Please check with the system vendor to determine if your system delivers this feature, or reference the system specifications (motherboard, processor, chipset, power supply, HDD, graphics controller, memory, BIOS, drivers, virtual machine monitor-VMM, platform software, and/or operating system) for feature compatibility. Functionality, performance, and other benefits of this feature may vary depending on system configuration.
The most comprehensive test is to run coreinfo from Microsoft Sysinternals on the machine in question.

How about this Dell Dimension 5000 Intel P4, allright maybe not THAT old... purchased in '05 back in Europe and still running strong on the latest Anniversary update. Also, over the years upgraded with 64-bit 3.4GHz CPU, Steel/Cu heatsink (lol) from an XPS 410, 4Gb RAM, 2Gb VRAM fanless, 2x256Gb SSD, Wireless adapter, new PSU. This thing is running absolutely silent, and has literally almost everything, including 6 in 1 cardreader, ancient 3.5" floppy, or FireWire... FWIW. Windows 10 is running so smooth on it amazed me every day. Good enough for what I do at home for many more years if future Windows updates plays along.

Yes Martin, Pentium 4, socket 775 CPUs (32 or 64-bit), on 11 or 12 year old motherboards run Windows 10 happily with 2GB or more RAM. My System Specs date my system to March 2nd 2005

What is the date of your BIOS by the way?

Not surprising at all that you can run Windows 10 on these specs. We sell refurbished PCs with much worse specs (Core 2 Duo 775 CPU 2GB RAM 80GB SATA hard disk) which can run Windows 10. As I mentioned in an older post in this thread, any Intel socket 775 CPU (except probably the first 32-bit single core Pentium 4 Prescott) is capable of running at least the 32-bit version of Windows 8 and 10. The challenge is running Windows 8 and 10 on older CPUs, without hacking the kernel (otherwise is cheating).

TIP: After a new clean installation of Windows 10, run the hard disk cleanup utility to remove any unwanted files and increase your free space. Then run a good defrag application such as Auslogics Defrag Free (Windows build-in utility is not very good) and do a full defrag of the hard disk. I would also run msconfig to stop any unnecessary services and applications loading at startup. This will make your old PC much faster!

Yeah but isn't the Core 2 Duo faster? It wasn't released until 2006, correct?

Right, unless you throw in a SSD to begin with. That's what I credit most of my system's perceived performance gain to anyway.

As for the AMD Opteron CPU, the manual at http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...230.1478130847 doesn't have it listed.

Don't check only the Technical Specifications. Check the CPU support list as well.
