re: a problem with win 10 been very slow

This is a Toshiba Satellite L455-S5000, OS Win 10 home 32bit. The Toshiba laptop is a bit older then my Gateway (my primary laptop). I keep the Toshiba around in case something happens to the gateway. If the Gateway goes down, I still have a way to get on line.

Anyways the Toshiba is been very, overall sluggish, to the point that internet searches on Firefox stall out, programs just flat out stop working and have to be restarted, the mouse freezes and so on. Short of wiping the partition and reinstalling everything, I don't know what to do.

Also When I try to run the 32bit version of Ultimaker Cura on the Toshiba I get the following error message "could not initalize OpenGL. This program requires OpenGL 2.0 or higher" Then the program shuts down. The 64bit version works fine on the Gateway running Win 64bit.

PS: the Toshiba has a 500gb HDD and 8gb's of memory.

    Hello @reble,

This type of problem can always be difficult to track down to a specific issue. However, there are a few things to try initially.

[1] Are ALL the WU's current?
[2] For a general clear up of the HDD, have a look at this . . .
    >> How to Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10 - Option Two
[3] Check the manufacturers website for Updated System/Device Drivers.
[4] Check for a BIOS Update.
[5] Have a look in Task Manager to see if there is ANYTHING hogging the HDD.
[6] Uninstall ANYTHING that you do NOT use.
    [7] Defragment the HDD.
    [8] Try a Clean Boot . . .
    >> How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

    I hope this helps.

You are running a laptop with 8 GB of RAM on a 32 bit Windows OS. 32 Bit Windows only supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, Adding another 4 GB of RAM is wasted because the OS can't see it. Only 64 bit OS's can use more the 4 GB of RAM.
Considering the age of the Toshiba Laptop, the HDD is probably in the beginning stages of failure.
You can test this theory by downloading Disk Genius in my signature. Select your disk, go to the Toolbar to
Disk/View SMART Information. This will give you a quick snapshot of the health of the drive. If you get a Warning message, that confirms the drive is beginning to fail. It will have some life left in it but not for long. You can also go to View or Repair Bad Sectors/Start Verify. This will take considerably longer but will show you all of the Bad Sectors you have. If so, then you should replace the drive with an SSD drive and reinstall Windows 10 64 Bit.

    1. I forgot about the fact the 32bit only sees 4gb of ram.

    2. I have been running 32bit because of certain ham radio digital decoding programs that I use only work on 32bit, the programs won't run on 64bit.

You can get a quick 'try it and see' determination as to whether the slowness is disk and O/S related to not simply by booting the laptop from a live boot disk (free) e.g. bob Omb's, Kyhi's, Hiren's ....

If it's quick enough then, then the problem probably lies with your O/S or disk.

The physical disk and then the filesystem on C: are easy to check.

    After that, look at
    - how much free space you have on C:
    - compare SAFE MODE and clean boot vs normal boot.
    etc...

32 bits software normally runs very well on Windows 64 bits.

    You should test your drive.
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

BTW I am trying to get the prog Ultimaker Cura for 3D printers working on the Toshiba and I keep getting an "OpenGL" error message then I have to hit Ctrl > Alt > Del to shut down the prog. I will let u know the results of the chkdsk c: /f exam.

I ran "chkdsk c: /f" the "Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc" never came up after the restart.

An easier way simply to check, as I've posted time and again here, is to run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.

To check your disk, again as I've posted time and again- recommended Hard Disk Sentinel (covers SSDs too).
Just run it- green is good.
