I am so sorry. I really had hopes for this. Yes, send some strong coffee over here, (preferably Irish ) and let's get going.

    Optional:
Open Macrium, select Other Tasks, and Add Recovery Boot Menu Option...

    Attachment 99461

Select W10PE 64 bit (everything else will say not built).

Macrium will update your boot menu. This will give you an option to boot into the Macrium rescue environment in the future. It will show as an option each time you boot your computer. This just makes life easier if you need to restore an image. If your hard drive fails/should need to be replaced, you'd still need a Macrium bootable disk or flash drive to do that. Again, this is optional. If you don't want Macrium in your boot menu, then skip this step.

Perform a Repair Install with an In-Place Upgrade:
    Here is the tutorial:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
There is an excellent video as well.

    Here are the steps:
    • Be sure you are in an administrative account.
    • Locate the Windows 10 ISO on your desktop.
    • Disconnect all peripherals from the system except keyboard, mouse and monitor.
    • Right-click the W10 ISO and select MOUNT.
    • Using File Explorer, navigate to the new drive letter of the mounted ISO.
    • Locate the file setup.exe and run it.
    • Select Download and Install Updates when prompted.
    • Accept the license terms.
    • When it gets to Ready to Install, verify it is installing the correct version of W10 (Home or Pro), and it says "keep personal files and apps". If it doesn't, click change what to keep and select to keep personal files and apps.
    • Now you wait.
    • When it finishes, you will have to setup your customized settings, just like a new install.
    • Once you are on the desktop, you will want to turn Fast Startup OFF, and System Restore ON.

    Any questions, please ask. :)
Don't have any Irish coffee, so I will add some John Jameson Irish Whiskey (my wife likes it,) and send it you to via a waterproof email attachment. (I think that that qualifies as an Irish Bull.)

I just printed your instructions, and the tutorial is in a Firefox tab waiting for my perusal.

I certainly hope that this goes according to Hoyle (and that is a rather nice anachronism.)

I have done a number of repair installs myself, and have suggested them in several threads over the past year - I have never had a problem with one yet. That said, I will knock wood right now. As long as you downloaded the correct ISO for your system, it should be fine. And, remember, we have the Macrium image you made off-line, in case something happens and we need to restore, so it's all good. You'll just need a Macrium boot media to get at it, if you don't add that to your boot menu.

Quick report, more to follow tomorrow:

I did add Macrium to the boot menu, something of which I was not aware before you told me how to do that.

    2. Repair install went well.

    3. Restore Point works.

    4. Strictly out of curiosity, the only thing I have restored is the Escort Detector Tools, which I ran, which identified my detector model and serial number. I told the program to update the database, which it did by first erasing the one installed, and then much faster than the erasure function, updated the detector.

    5. Restore Point still works.

Given my earlier frustration, I think that the best way to sign off for today would be "Sigh, Oh Nara."

Time for a drink! I think a chocolate martini will do.

Time also for a Macrium backup before you put anything else back on the system.

See you tomorrow. Thanks for hanging in there.

Sic transit gloria mundi, although today is Saturday on my side of the International Date Line.

I shall conclude this by saying that not only has the problem been fixed, but that, surprisingly, the in-place remedy did not even change my Windows 10 settings. I went into Settings, to reset those items I expected to find had been altered; they were not. As far as I have ascertained so far, everything is now back to where it was before the difficulty arose.

I am certain no one will ever know what caused the fatal error; I only hope that it does not reappear. If that does occur, I know now how to fix it.

I can do no more than offer my thanks for all those who made valiant efforts to assist me in figuring out what was causing the Restore Point failure, as well as my certainty that the Macrium failure was directly connected to the Restore Point failure.

Glad that your issues have been all repaired. :) But please do what simrick suggested and Make a Complete Image Backup NOW before reinstalling any software. This is your best insurance policy to protect your system.
One more thing, from reading lots of your posts during this process, please do NOT remove Windows system files in the future, it is much better for you to turn them off, rather than delete them, as this can affect other things in your Windows 10.

Macrium backup was created at the time that I decided it was the time to do it. As for turning off Windows Defender, as I wrote earlier in this thread, Avast! turned it off, not I. Afterwards, there were constant pop-ups telling me to turn on a program that could not be turned on, and my on-line research led to the conclusion that the only way to stop that was to delete WD.

(It is not exactly that I don't have much experience with MS operating systems, having been using them since March, 1983.)

    YAY!
So, System Restore is ON and working, Fast Startup is OFF, Macrium is running properly, and your settings are intact.

I can only guess, and part of me thinks that it began with Avast+WD, and snowballed. Avast did have some issues recently, and they were fixed within a matter of 3 or 4 days, but it could have been just enough damage that it couldn't recover. Right around that time MS made changes to WD as well. Those WD notices you were getting were just not right. But again, we can only speculate. Your suspicion that the Macrium and Restore Point problems were related makes sense and it's too bad we couldn't identify and resolve the culprit.

Just my opinion, but this is a pretty good security setup, (which I use myself):
Avast Free AV (the 3 web shields ONLY, plus the software updater - everything else is fluff and problems)
MBAM Free (Their anti-ransomware beta module will eventually be rolled into their paid version)
MBAE (Malwarebytes Antiexploit for zero-day protection of browsers)
CryptoPrevent Free (for protection against ransomware and other nasties which execute from non-standard locations in the system)
    SuperAntiSpyware Free
    Ccleaner Free

No tune-up utilities at all, as they usually end up causing more problems than they fix.

It's been great working with you. Sorry we never "nailed it", but at least it's fixed, and you stuck it out heroically. If any more problems arise, please come here and start a new thread and we'll tackle things.

    Cheers!

Partly solved Macrium Reflect backup failures, how further?

Thanks for all your solutions / advices.
Suddenly, I had the same problem, all backup jobs failed due to VSS errors.

I followed the Macrium kb document and several other advices, but nothing helped. Until I changed the Reflect > Other Tasks > Edit Defaults > Advanced > VSS Options and checked Exclude all VSS writers to resolve specific snapshot failures.
Now I can backup the system disk again. But other disks still fail with error 21.

My question is: how can I repair this situation for all disks?
