Sure it's safe since it doesn't do anything.

This thread was opened by a new member, Miel, for the sole purpose of "discussion" of various cleaning type applications. It seems to be growing into a thread of negative discourse. No problems or issues were stated by the OP, so I have to assume he has none. There, also, have not been any comments posted by the OP since the initial opening. I question the necessity of having this thread in Performance and Maintenance and suggest it be moved to the Chill Out room where this type of discussion would not be as readily exposed to members actually looking for help on Performance and Maintenance, and would be subject to the stricter rules of the Chill Out forum.

f14tomcat, I believe our new member might be better served by us masses if he had specific questions about specific utilities. If I were asked to compare/contrast Resplendence Registrar Registry Manager, or any other such utility to Windows RegEdit to complete possible tasks and accomplish possible results -- I could much better come up with positives, suggestions, ideas. However, to ask a broad-side question like registry cleaners -- well, I really do not know where to start. I would like to know the desired goals, the desired actions to be accomplished, then, I can tailor my comments to MEET or get close to his goals and action steps.

To quote a Houston-based business man years ago: "What exactly is it that you want to do?"

I don't see anyone here starting any argument or requiring a warning like that. This is a thread that's allowed to morph into a discussion on the merit of registry cleaning.. this occurs in many threads here. And by allowing this to stay in the current forum it will give members a good idea of the merits of a registry cleaner.. if there are any.

My take is that a registry cleaner is not needed and hasn't been of any use since WIn95/98. From the articles and evidence that's out on the Web by many there is no proof that a registry cleaner has any affect on the performance of a PC. While cleaning up a few dead entries in the registry data base might feel good it's not needed.

BunnyJ, I must respectfully disagree that nothing good comes from registry editing. In the past, precision drilling or precise surgery within a registry was necessary from time to time. Never for "performance," "speeding up," "optimizing," I've done such for several reasons which include cleaning up an incomplete uninstall, getting ready for a really clean ReInstall, and other reasons. I never recommend registry editing without also recommending having at least one if not two full images of the OS and data partitions on at least one if not two usb external platter HDs.

I just remembered the thread opening also mentioned: driverbooster and slimcleaner
I do not recommend such utilities; many forums through-out The 'Net also do not recommend such utilities.

I used a bazooka once, and the blowback caused me to reach for my recently saved full OS image.

I would never tell anyone not to use a registry cleaner like CCleaner. For me I never used one for reasons already stated. But if someone does use one I recommend that a backup of the system and/or the registry is a must just in case something does go wrong.
