My windows 10 pro is running great, i love it
I do currently do regular restore points, but for peace of mind would like to backup everything to an external usb drive, just in case
I would welcome your advice please

1. Use 3rd party disk imaging regularly and routinely to large enough external drive.
Free or paid options.
This has been reviewed many times on tenforums. Please feel free to search tenforums for more.

Macrium Reflect (free is still available, no more security updates for free now).
Chinese: Aomei Backupper, Hasleo Backup
O&O DiskImage - German- (often the previous version is given away)

I have Aomei which I used to clone drive to new ssd
Will have to learn how to do backup
Disk imaging... is different to the file and folder backup Aomei Backupper provides.
Image files are compressed copies of the used parts of the partitions selected.

Differential and incremental imaging are far faster than the first full image, and using a backup job you create can mean you can keep imaging your O/S etc repeatedly, having the space on the backup disk managed automatically by the backup job, and have the option to restore to, say, 5 different dates from image backups on the same external disk.
Image files can be mounted and explored.
