    Hello JBR123,

It is my pleasure to assist and I hope in some way that I have helped.
One other thing of note: I have also used both the Windows 10 and older Windows 7 backup methods for some time now. However, a couple of years ago, I also started using Macrium Reflect. In my opinion, for full-image and Incremental backups, this software takes the cake. Fast and reliable.

Thanks again. It is reassuring that there are people like your good self who are willing and able to help the less experienced such as myself. I'll have a look at Macrium Reflect (Free).

This is an old thread, but "googling" I found it. @telepro21 comment solve the problem.

Same issue. History file backup stopped since one month ago, but you don't know nothing about it, because you don't received any notification. The file history backup is running, but if you see the date of last backup, this did days, weeks, months.... ago.

Switching of file history, rebooting and turning it on again solve the issue, but you must check it periodically to check if all are running right.

No wartning/error notify from windows 10 about it. The external drive was detected with no issue.

Did you get the upgrade to 1803 one month ago? I had File History stop working after the upgrade from 1703 to 1709. Like you, I didn't know anything about it until I looked at the date of the last backup. As you say, turning it off and on again was the fix.

I would agree that you need to check it's working, but it's probably only necessary after an upgrade to a new version of windows. I checked, and this time it continued working through the upgrade to 1803.

Note File History only backs up your user files and not your entire installation. Macrium Reflect Free is excellent for full system backups. You can mount a backup image to recover any file/folder including your user files.

I've found File History somewhat unreliable and sometimes have to reset it as follows:

    • Stop FH service
    • Delete FH config files at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration
    • Restart FH and select to use the same backup drive as before
