quote from post #6: It is easy to make an image with Windows - it is another matter if you want to recover from that image
quote from post #6 : Nothing is worse than an image that does not work in times of need
quote from post #6 : And Windows images often do not work.

Where did post #6 said it came from your own experience ?
You put a blanket over it and condemned it.
    That's why I replied back.

Yes It is a useless discussion. That I agree.
You have already declared it a piece of useless crap. There is nothing left to discuss.

So how does one test if an image backup will work? My computer was made by Dell early in 2010 and came with an operating system disk.

    Just run it.
Plug in your ext hdd > Start button > Settings > Update & Security >left side, click Recovery > right side, under Advanced Startup, click Restart Now > Troubleshoot >Advanced Options > select System Image Recovery > follow the prompts .....

As whs suggested get yourself an alternate way of backup your PC, invest in external drive and cable, it is fool proof way to get in an emergency, I would suggest free clone Macrium software to do the work, it is up to you to decide. Read up on cloning on your HD, once you do it, you never go back to image backup, you would go with third party clone.

    To chipwood,
If you are able to login, you can run the image recovery with the method I posted on post #13.
If you cannot login, then you can use your Dell Installation DVD and select Repair option which will also lead you to system image recovery.

    In case you need it....................
Restore your computer from a system image backup

Nothing is worse than an image that does not work in times of need. And Windows images often do not work. That's why most of us go with free Macrium or alike. Those are rock solid.
    Agreed...

I've switched to Macrium way back with Windows 7, after the first problem with recovery of Windows backup. The issue in my case may have been due to user error, or with the limitations of Windows backup. In either case, the third-party image backups are more flexible and less error prone than Windows backup. Just my nickel (adjusted for inflation)...

this is real life experience just yesterday, I was infected with so called 'ransomware' and screen looks very alike to MS, so I just replaced my HD which I have cloned nearly every 10 days or so and in business within few minutes, I have to tell the scammers, not in my life time would they get the money from me. My Macrium solved the problem.
Disclosure macrium does not pay me to write this nor do I work for them.

Thought I'd follow instructions of Msoft's item https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10
but get First system image backup: is this right?-media-tool-fail.gif I have followed those instructions and the same thing happens, so how do I download the ISO?

BTW has anyone experience of Cobian as a backup tool? I heard it recommended somewhere, but can't recall when or where. My forgettery is improving day by day. The less complicated the tool is the better!

2 sites you can use to download Windows 10 iso files :

    Tech Bench
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w)()

    Media Creation Tool (MCT)
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10

I recommend that you use the Tech bench link.

    To : chipwood

Not sure what did you do to get the error message from MCT.

If you care to, please use the Tech Bench link and follow my simple steps :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w

scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select Windows 10 > click Confirm.
click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
at the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.

You can burn the iso to a bootable media, DVD or USB, for future reinstall.
