    Free file backup software

    Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good free third party software for file backup.....?

I googled it, but it seems that some free tools do not work well with W10.

I have Macrium and use it for Imaging/Cloning, but the free version does not offer file backup.

I would like to save my pictures and videos incrementally on an external HDD.

    Thanks,

I use EaseUS | Data Recovery, Backup, Partition Manager & PC Utility Software which handles both system images and selective data backups - the free version has all the tools you need for basic set-ups including scheduling.

We as a site actually had a free offer recently for the slightly more advances Home version so may be worth checking google for similar offers but I can recommend the free version

    FreeFileSynch works for me.

It's not free , but second copy does a damned good automatic job with lots of options , timed backups , copy , replace , duplicate , mirror etc.

For free 'FreeFileSynch' , less options but good for manual daily backups of set folders.

I use both, second copy every day on an automatic scheduled timer and freefilesync weekly to an external storage area.

It seems FreeFileSync has good reviews, though some complained that the latest version brought in some malware during download.

What is the safest place to download it from.....?

    Thanks,

I think this is the developer's site which is usually the best location for clean copies. Can't actually state it'll be clean as it's not one I use but should be

Have run a check on the installer with Comodo AV and Malwarebytes Pro and both show it to be clean

Just before downloading FreeFileSync I gave Windows native file backup tool one more chance, it was bad.

FreeFileSync download brought along some Tune-up utility, but I just uninstalled it.

I got a little confused at first with their terminology, but eventually FreeFileSync worked exactly as expected.
I still do not understand the difference between 'Mirror' and 'Update'.

Along with FreeFileSync a RealTimeSync got installed, a tiny little tool, but I do not understand its purpose.

Thank you all for your good advice.

"Mirror" makes the folders look alike. So if you were to delete a file on A it will be deleted on B when you synchronize.
"Update" will just move any new or updated files from A to B, but not delete any.
I suggest you create a folder called "Backups" and put everything you want backed up under it. Makes it easier.
And become familiar with FreeFileSynch by copying some files to a "backup" folder and testing how it works.
You could lose files if you don't understand how the different functions work.
