The intake fans and internals may be clogged up..............Sadly too many people take the term LAPtop too literally (I apologise in advance if this is not the case with yourself)

A laptop should sit on a hard solid surface like a table etc. if it is used on a person's lap it will pick up fluff and debris from a persons clothing, bedding in the very small air intakes.

I cannot find an exact video for the particular model but see the following for the X550
ASUS X550 - Disassembly and fan cleaning - YouTube

IF you feel uncomfortable doing this PLEASE seek professional attention from a PC/Laptop supplier.

Your temps are normal. My Core i5 tablet heats up to 90 degrees under full stress.

Anyways, check which program is consuming CPU by going to details tab of Task manager and sort by CPU.

This happened to me last week. I thought it was my video driver that was taxing the system and causing the overheating. My HP laptop has a little program by hp that monitors that heat and shuts down the machine if it reaches unacceptable levels.

So...I tried everything and then got out the screwdriver...looked inside and the fans were caked with crap! There are 2 of them and I blew them both totally clean and then all the vents.

TIP: When using canned air do NOT blow into your vents in an attempt to clean them as that only drives the gunk further into your computer and making the problem worse (or causing a problem if you are just doing this routinely.)

Once I did that the computer has not had another overheating incident so I am 100% confident that was the issue - solved.

You may need professional service, but I would first try to blow away as much dust as possible with an air spay or compressor. Open any covers you can (memory, hard disk etc) and try to blow dust. If you go to a professional, ask to replace the thermal paste as well. This will make a huge difference.

I've seen viruses and malware peg CPUs to the point the machine is crippled. Install anything (apps, toolbars, plug-ins, etc.) around the time the laptop started to lose performance?

If I was to go out and buy AV software today, I'd probably look at Kaspersky or Eset. For free, keep AVG up to date and it'll be OK. Even the native Defender is as good with Win 8 and 10. Make sure Defender is disabled if you do have AVG, it should be but good to check. Having 2 AV scanners running is another resource sucker.

You may want to download and install malwarebytes. It'll go after with AVG won't. I bought a license for their app as it'll run as a service blocking malware. Does a pretty good job.

Also, go up to piriform's website and get a copy of ccleaner. the free version is fine. Run it to clean up unneeded files, then run it to clean the registry. It'll back up any registry entries it removes in case you need to reinstall them. You may need to run ccleaner several times as sometimes its like peeling an onion - each time you remove a layer, more is exposed. When done, reboot and then rescan with both AVG and malwarebytes.

That's my 10 cent tour FWIW. Disinfecting machines can be a time chore. Bleepingcomputer has great info posted if your scans do reveal any problems. There's so many good tools out there depending on the issue found. Of course, all this could reveal nothing and you'll still have a slug of a computer. It's just been my experience that slow-responsive machines with pegged CPUs means there's a busy process going on, and it's usually not a good one. As with any advice, ymmv...

About your memory upgrade, should not be a problem unless the case had to be cracked and a warranty seal was broken, a rarity these days. But if you have a door that accesses the memory slots, you should be fine. Try removing the added memory and boot up the machine to see if the memory was the issue. Doubt it, but anything is possible.

You never did answer my question - anything at all installed lately around the time the machine started to lose performance?
