I would guess that your computer is crashing. The monitor only tells you when the monitor is asleep, you'd have to look to your computer to see what the computer is doing, though it likely has no blinking light. So going with my gut, I would suggest you follow these directions and post to the BSOD forum: BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

So before uploading those files, some things you might try to take care of are updating both Windows and all drivers via your computer's manufacturer website. They will have a list of things to install. If you need help figuring out just what, I can help with that.

Additionally, use your antivirus program (sometimes just Windows Defender which comes with it) to scan for any malware. Then upload those files that the link I provided above are referring to.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded and installed a program that fires off key strokes every 60 seconds to keep the computer from sleeping at all. If that works, I figure that is as good a solution as I can manage.

Hi, 'Don't sleep' (freeware) may be a nicer option to tide you over (freeware, easy to find).
Some people find they need to install an older driver - e.g. that worked on a previous version of Windows. E.g. their graphics driver. There are many reports of issues such as this - there is another long thread on this forum:
Unable to come out of Sleep mode - Windows 10 Forums

    - and quite a few more - you may find something to help.

Right, changing to High Performance has no effect. It's interesting that I have the exact same issue of "black screen with the monitor's showing they are in power saving mode (i.e. the indicator light on the monitor is amber rather than the usual blue)". I have a Dell HD monitor connected to my graphics card with an HDMI cable.
If this is a motherboard issue, then that's a bummer. It's true that this never happened with Windows 7...but I'd really hate to roll back to that at this point.

No joy on changing to High Performance.

Not sure how to tell what/why I have a black screen with the monitor's showing they are in power saving mode (i.e. the indicator light on the monitor is amber rather than the usual blue). Any suggestions?

I downloaded a program called Caffeine that solved my problem (so far, at least). It has a setting where I can allow the screen to blank out without having the computer sleep.

This is why you are having the issue to begin with, so the only 'fix' likely is what you've just done. I thought it was a crashing problem, but what you described makes me believe that it really is as simple as not waking up from sleep state. In any event, the drivers would be to blame.

Mine too is an older MB with no driver updates in ages.

The question still remains, though, why it even goes to sleep. It's been told NOT to. So why would Windows ignore that setting? This doesn't seem like a BIOS issue as much as a Windows issue.
Did you look in the advanced power settings to make sure it's not set to auto hibernate ?

If it is the Sleep/Hibernate after setting, then yes, it is set to "never".
