Funny - may not have responded to you exactly..

The How To - suggests the Techbench media...

If you download the Techbench media - the Source should no be corrupt..

The reason for your POST (not the orginial Post)

The MCT media is locked by the Mediadata.xml file and will cause errors.. (a file not contained within Techbench ISO)

I have at least 4 iso's I downloaded from Microsoft direct that will not work as the Source for DISM - the only one that does is the TechBench version.
This is not completely true. The suggestion is to download the Techbench version and use DISM to apply to install.wim directly. However, you can also use the version download from MCT except it will involve an extra step as follows:
    1. Use the latest version of 7-Zip to extract the content of install.esd. For example: to a folder xxx on the desktop
    2. From Admin command prompt:
      Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\xxx\windows /LimitAccess

See screen shot, the contents of install.wim and install.esd are exactly the same.

    hmm...

I assumed they were the same all along so I tried simply COPYING the .esd AND the .wim out, and tried to use them but that didn't work either. Now that you mention EXTRACTING it out, that maybe makes more sense.

I thought the .esd version was encrypted. Does 7-zip take care of that?

It's not encrypted. It's just a compressed version of install.wim, smaller file size, faster to download. 7-Zip version 15-12 will read the .esd file as shown from the screen shot.

    Hi guys,

I suppose the MediaMeta answer file is contained within install.esd since it causes trouble for DISM ?

    TIA,

Leave it up to Microsoft to make the most archaic and unexplainable methods to find problems and then really convolute them with the hoops you have to jump through to fix them. This is absolutely the height of ridiculousness. First off the entire Event Viewer should only show important errors. Instead of some ridiculous code it should say in ENGLISH exactly what the error is and why it occurred and what must be done to resolve it. That could all be put directly in the code if they had a clue how to code. And the fix should be as simple as copying a file or running script that resolves it in its entirety.

It shouldn't take me a week to fix a problem.

All I can say is having been on both ends of that, coder and user, it isn't as simple as you think it is or should be.

Event logs. in fact most error logs, are not written for users, they are written mainly for developers and Microsoft debuggers who have documentation and source code to use with the log entries.

If scanow displays errors they may be able to be repaired using restorehealth.
If restorehealth cannot repair the files then you may be able to be repaired by performing an in place upgrade repair.

The in place upgrade repair can be performed with the same iso or with a newer iso.

The in place upgrade repair with the same iso should be able to repair problems with the operating system and is unlikely to repair registry problems.

The in place upgrade repair with a newer iso if the upgrade is successful is likely to repair both operating system and registry problems.

The in place upgrade repair can be done now with 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809.

The in place upgrade repair for 1903 is likely to become available in the next 30 to 45 days.
