hard drive running 50 to 100%

had windows 8.1 and started to have this problem with hard drive running to 100 percent
    so i
upgraded to windows 10 (no apps just user data) and still have same problem

in task manager i look at disk performance and dont see a process that appears to me to be causing the problem
looked at virtual memory (set on auto) so i changed it to 1344 and then back to auto. it ask to reboot
    still not fixed

Try Resource Monitor in Windows under disk see if locate any processes there using a lot. Check Event Viewer under Custom, Administrator Events, anything about disk. Usually would say scan for Viruses and Malware, but as happened on other OS.Could be a drive issue, have anything to test the drive and SMART data ?

This may be first signs of a hardware failure. Do you have a backup of anything that's relevant on that disc?

i looked at administrator events and didnt find anything on disk however
one message said this is taking too long it might be a hardwear failure

i ran crystal disk info and hd tune. all that turned up was a warning about reallocated sectors
i think that is high and means the hd is going bad

I've witnessed this happening on two different laptops. One Toshiba and one dell. Damn HDD just churns and churns forever. I wish I could figure out what the hell is causing it. Nothing significant on the resource monitor. Its almost as if its out of RAM but its only used 50%.

    Hello,

I had the same issue, for me the solution was changing the automatic windows updates to manual.
So try changing the settings from "Automatically search and download windows updates" to manually deciding which one to download and install.

    Hope it helps you out.

Should of posted the Events from Event Viewer so we can see along with Crystal Disk and HDTune results. What did Resource Monitor show for processes if checked ? Little more info on your specs, laptop i see, believe might be a few models of that Toshiba.
