Long delay before new files or folders appear

    W10 22H2

Recently when I go to create a new folder or save a file, it takes a VERY long time for file to appear.
For example, I just created a new folder on the desk top (no apps running) it took 38 sec before it appeared.
Seems to be any new file form a program or a new folder saved in any location
There is no issue with opening files - as quick as it has always been, it's just saving new files.
I have run full anti-virus scan, and also sfc /scannow. (no issues reported)

Hi, please try this in SAFE MODE and if ok, after a clean boot and report outcome.

    Recently
    - a. Consider using a System Restore point before this started.
    - b. History- what changed 'recently'?

    If still problems:
    a. Does this occur on both disks?
    b. Check your disks: Crystal Diskinfo (free) or better Hard Disk Sentinel (covers SSDs too).

I tried 'create folder' on C:\ it is immediate
    on E:\ it is 30 - 40 sec

Windows is configured to use E:\ for all saved files incl Desktop, Pictures, Music, Video, Documents.

Not a space limitation as plenty free

    Interesting.
    Try

    Many found that resolved this.

    Otherwise

    Again:
Please try this in SAFE MODE and if ok, after a clean boot and report outcome.

I would never conceive of using the Location tab to do that as I presume you have for reasons I've given on numerous previous occasions.

Please also run Crystal DiskMark on your 2nd drive and compare that with reference cases you should be able to find on the web.

    Rightclick on Start ==> Run
    and type
    %userprofile%
What are the folders that appear? Like E:\username\Documents?

E: is on the same disk or an old HDD

1st step should be like this:
Change Storage Save Locations in Windows 10
    2nd step

Long delay before new files or folders appear-move_documents_folder_location-3.png

In the address line type in the path from step 1 (Like E:\username\Documents) and click on <OK>

    Windows is installed on C:\
After install procedure was followed to move folders that I save files in (Pictures, Music, Video, Documents) to a physically different drive.
This has worked fine for years, and is detailed in a 'tutorial' here. Move Location of Pictures Folder in Windows 10

I just tried a reboot into SAFE mode the fault does not happen ... i.e. immediate appearance of files & folders.

I carried out the %userprofile% step and pic attached - Long delay before new files or folders appear-userprofile.jpg

So await the next stage- a clean boot. As per my 1st post. And I guess you didn't try link I posted in #6.
I'd prefer not to keep repeating...

I know all about that. Because of the risk of doing that (if you get it wrong) I asked Brink to add the recommendation to create a system image before using that. He did.

Then consider what happens should you clean install.

Then consider that 3rd party programs fill those folders with their own- so they are not your personal folders.

Then consider you can create your own folders independently- outside those default folders- and add them to a library.
There are better options. But your PC is your PC- your choice of course.

I know that you always have 2 Folders! Almost everyone does it the wrong way.

    My looks like this:
Long delay before new files or folders appear-screenshot-2024-03-27-203024.png

It is important that you make the 1st step,
Change Storage Save Locations in Windows 10
before you you make the 2nd step:
In the Location TAB you enter the path:

    E:\yourname\Documents
repeat that with Music, Downloads, pictures, ....

It is safe and there is no (!) risk. I could show you more than 100 PCs with that config.
I do not have a singel personal file on (C:)

If you doubleclick on the 2 Document-Folders you see 2 different locations!
I have just 1 location! That makes it easy to run a backup etc.
