Running out of memory with no usage and plenty of RAM installed.

    Hi guys,
I have an issue that hunts me for some time now.

I have a system that should be more then good for me but it looks like I am missing something.

My System is as follows: I7-6700K, 64 GB, NVidia GeForce 1060 6Gb, 1 Nvme, 1 Hdd and 4 SSD, a total of 6TB storage.
    I am running Windows 10 Pro, 22H2.

Every time I am starting my system with no program started, it is using a lot of RAM.
I have attached a picture that shows the status of my system with Firefox, Spotify and taskmanager running, I am using 12GB RAM.

If I start a large download it will go to 50% usage, with no other program using the RAM.

I really do not get it.

    Please advise.
    Thank you.

Windows 10 works differently in its memory management. Its base use varies according to how much RAM you start with e.g. I use 4 GB when I have 16 GB, so 12 GB for 64 GB does not seem unreasonable.

As for large memory use during a download, the RAM is just being used as a buffer. Don't forget when you download files, it is downloaded in zillion of pieces like a jigsaw, and OS has to store those pieces and create an assembled version, so if all the download fits in RAM, I would expect the RAM usage to be at leaat doubke the final file downsize.

For those with less RAM, eventually stuff would be being written to your internal storage which is slower than using RAM.

You do not say what a large download is.

However, once download has completed, and file assembled and stored on pc, the memory should be released. If not, you may have a memory leak issue.

Without a much deeper investigation, I cannot see anything immediately obviously wrong.

    Thank you for your help.

When I am referring to a large file download, I am referring to more then 140GB using a torrent software.

I understand that after the download, the system should get back to a more reasonable amount of memory usage but it does not.
It goes to 99% and the system stops responding, I need to restart it manually( the hard way ).

I had 16GB RAM in the past and this issue was extreme. Now with 64GB.... it takes a little bit more time to crash, but it still does.

For example: I had Firefox on (using 1.9GB), COD2 (8GB) and I was downloading a 149GB file and the system was showing that I am using 51% of all my RAM, that is more then 32GB.

    I do not understand why.

That is large. Using 32GB seems very realistic due to size of download.

Have you tried setting a large pagefile so Windows can offload RAM as it fills up?

I did not change the setting for the pagefile.

It is still set on auto for all drives.
At this time it shows that it is 23 552MB.

    Should I change it?

I would create a manual one say 20 GB. Whether it makes any difference ir not - just have to try it.

Do you have multiple explorer.exe running in task manager?
