Windows 10 100% Disk Usage every 5 Seconds

    Hi all,

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, if it is PLEASE send me a link of the RESOLVED thread.

I have this issue where windows seems to hang/get stuck every 5 to 10 seconds for about 2 seconds, like right now while I am typing. I type the words and about three words types out and then hangs for 2 seconds and the rest I typed while stuck gets lost and I have to backspace and restart again.... Same happens with mouse clicks, sometimes when I click it does not register (I presume it is right in that 2 sec delay sweet spot) but the mouse cursor movement is smooth and does not get stuck.

SO I checked my Task Manager and found that RAM,CPU and Network are all low in the 10% - 20%, but my HDD Runs at like 80% -100% all the time. See Screenshots of Task Manager and Resource monitor. The disk keeps getting used full load every 5 to 10 sec.

    Windows 10 100% Disk Usage every 5 Seconds-hdd-usage-2.jpg

I have tried disabling Disk Defragment service in the Task Scheduler and several other tips I found on the net but no luck.

Sorry I am not a fundi on PC's by any means, but I do have a bit of knowledge and applied all the normal things like check background scanning programs like Anti Virus and System Maintenance processes, also did a clean boot to make sure no extra services are running but problem still persists

Has anyone figured out what the problem is here?

    Thank you for the reply,
It is good to know about this feature in Win 10, but unfortunately it does not solve my problem,
I had another look at what process is causing my hangups, it seems to be a process called mpam-fxxx.exe.

This is Windows Defender that Microsoft generously smeared down on me, even though I have my own Antivirus software. I disabled Windows Defender and it went great for about 5 minutes, but yet again System Service is hoging my harddrive and causing alot of wasted time for me. I have to retype each sentence about 5 times, I have to click eack click about 5 times, this is getting so annoying, I'm thinking about binning Win 10 till next year....

Any one else have same experience or know of solution to this, I'd appreciate it very much !!

the mpam-xxxxx.exe is a malware definitions update, and should only run for a few seconds to install the definitions. It shouldn't keep running all the time. Check your Windows Update history and see if this is failing for some reason. If so, it's probably because your anti-virus was improperly installed.

Going way back in PC history, every new PC came with loads of what we might politely call "Crapware".
Those are programs installed by the manufacturer, in this case Microsoft, that we don't want, don't need and in many cases don't even know exist on our PC's.

Think about buying a shiny new pickup truck, that came already loaded with 1 Ton of rock in the bed.

But all is not lost. The internet has been awash with articles on how to get rid of the stuff we don't want, don't need, and just want to be RID' of. Like the info in this link: (posted previously)
How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC's bandwidth to update strangers' systems | PCWorld

Then there's "Cortana". I don't want it! I will never use it! I want it disabled so it won't load into ram on every bootup.
Well, even if you go into the proper place and de-select it....... it will still load its .DLL file into ram, taking up anywhere from 21megs to 888megs of ram. One fix I read suggests deleting the entire Folder where Cortana lives. That's BAD info, because that also disables your start menu and Search. (NOT GOOD at all!)

But if you find the "Cortana.Core.dll" file and change the name to "Cortana.Core.ddd" for instance, it cannot load into ram, but everything else, like the Start menu and Search, will still work. And if you ever change your mind and want to use 'Cortana', you can change the name back to its original "Cortana.Core.dll", reboot and you'll have Cortana back.

I'm sure that a careful search will find even more things in Windows 10 that can be shut down to save memory and increase performance. I've also found, that all the Performance Tweaks that I used in XP, Win-7, & Win-8.1 still work just fine in Win-10.
But that's a topic for a different time.

    Happy Computing!

Adding to the previous advice about background software

I am by no means an expert in Windows 10, but the same thing happened to me. Suddenly - 100% disk usage and very slow performance. I had just installed Sumo, (software to scan software and list needed updates). I uninstalled it, did a cold reboot and all appears to be well.

    Have you found your solution?

You must try this. Turn off "show me tips for win 10" in notifications in setting->system->notification&apps.
I found this solution online at : Windows 10 high Disk usage (100%) I've seen a thread here explaining how to fix it but I seem to have lost it... : techsupport

    Solved for Windows 10 x64, Lenovo Y50

Turning off notifications SOLVED the disk-usage issue for me! Thank you very much!

    To solve the issue:

    1. Right click the start bar -> Click "Properties"
    2. Click "Customize" next to 'Notification Area:'
    3. Slide all bars to "Off" in the 'Notifications' category
    4. Finished!

Before, I was sitting at 99% disk usage continuously even while idling! Now I am idling (with chrome running) at a much more reasonable 3% disk usage (using Windows 10 x64, Lenovo Y50 Laptop). Thanks again!
