    New PC seems slow, why?

Hi Everyone, My neighbour has bought a brand new Dell Inspiron 3471 desktop:-

    https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/desk...sktop/cd347101

I went around there this morning to set it all up and it seems slow to me, I was installing Adobe reader and that seemed to take ages, any idea why?

Intel® Pentium® Gold Processor G5420 (4M Cache, up to 3.8 GHz) Is that a mobile CPU? Sometimes desktops have mobile / laptop CPU in them and that can cause it to be slow.

I guess a SSD might make things a bit faster but I'm not sure the expense.

Is there any software that I can use that will tell me why a PC is slow? Or is it down to benchmarks and comparing?

    Thanks

    Steve

A rough indication can be gained with the WEI
How to Check Your Windows Experience Score on Windows 10

The specs indicate it has only 4Gb RAM which is a bit low.

Have a look at the task manager and see what the resource usage is.

When the PC is nominally idle, all figures should be low, and RAM use should leave some free.

Note that PC uses shared graphics memory.

You can also check the disk transfer rate (copying a large file back to the disk is a crude way) - or use benchmarking programs of course.

Budget 2 core processor, 4 gigs of ram, and no SSD. What do you expect for the price point? You get what you pay for.
All your neighbor saw was the price and possibly the 1tb drive.

I did like the WEI tool that used to be in Win 10, so maybe i'll give that a go, I'll see if I can find a portable version, I like portable apps

    Hi,
10 home is the kiss of death of performance
10 does what it wants period no group policy control in the least bit.

Note that the link to show WEI simply uses commands available in Windows. Nothing to download if you use those. Sure, there's Winaero's tool too.

It's above a Celeron and below an i3. Introduced about a year ago. Quite modest and for laptops. Retails for circa 80.

    Keep your expectations low.

    Hi,
You are right there seeing out of the box both versions do the same thing until group policy/.... can tame 10 down so it doesn't soak up all resources to do what it wants too while the user wonders why there is nothing left for them to do basic chores.
10 pro or enterprise is just easier to tame 10 than home version.

About all 10 home can do is pause updates briefly but even that doesn't do a lot.
