Incredibly slow file transfer

    Hello,

I have the same issue reported here by others.

I have a gigabit intranet with 3 PC (1x win 7 + 2x win 10) and I need to copy huge amounts of data between them (>5 TB).

Although I see the same problems as almost everyone else here, i.e. my transfer rates are never higher than 25MB/s when copying data from one PC to the other using the windows copy process, I did carry out some test using the following software: Downloads | Totusoft

The results are impressive!!! Testing the transfer of files of 500 MB I get up to 800+ MB/s transfer (in both direction and between all PCs), which is what I would expect from my pc/network configuration.

So, as I see it, the problem does not lie in the hardware, but in some windows stuff. And I have it for Win7toWin10 (and vice versa) as well between two Win10 PCs.

Could you please check the transfers on your PCs using the same software and report, what the results are?

Some new ideas about why this happens?

    Cheers

    Hi all,

This issue is from when they made windows xp, Microsoft did think lets make a bandwidth reservation, what is a registry setting.
If you have 1Gb network throughput, what is 100% there would be 15% till 20% reserved for Voip, error and other stuff (this is agreed over the whole world).
So if I have large data transfers from my windows 10 computer to my NAS (openmediavault, unix/ Linux, which don't care if I use my hardware full potential) and visa versa, I will get a transfer speed of around the 84MB a 86MB, which is around 84% usage of my 1Gb network (16% is for Voip and stuff).

If I do the same thing between two windows machines is the datatransfer only 30MB max.
Microsoft thought lets reserve 60% of the bandwidth and use only 40%, now if you have 1Gb network (100%) and only use 40% which is to be handled as 100%, minus the 15% till20% reserved for voip and error, you will get 25MB to 30MB datatransfer. then it should be the case that if we have 2 datatransfers from one machine to 2 different machines, the transferrate should be both around the 25MB a 30MB, but this is in best case.

Within windows7 can this problem be resolved, by Disable Bandwidth Limit...
I used for this GPEDIT.msc and then within computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Network, QoS Packet Scheduler.
    Double-click on Limit reservable bandwidth.
    And disable it.
IMPORTAND NOTE: this has to be done on all windows machines. and watch out with the use of Gpedit.msc

For windows 10 I have to vind out for myself if this works.
I hope this was helpful enough..

    cheers all.

I got the transfer speed back by adding the application c:\windows\explorer.exe to Windows Defender exclusions, perhaps not the best solution but worked well for me.

Worked for me! Good find. USB3.0 memory stick now transferring at a decent transfer rate instead of keep stopping and starting.

Here is another option I found

    Disable Remote Differential Compression

The Remote Differential Compression enables syncing data using compression techniques. This reduces the size of data sent across the network. Speed up the file copying, moving and deletion process by turning off the RDC.

    1. Type Windows Features in the Search box on the taskbar.
    2. Open Turn Windows Features On or Off from the Search Results.
    3. You have a new dialog consisting of a list of all Windows features. Uncheck the box labelled Remote Differential Compression and then click OK.
    4. In order to finish the process, a system reboot is required.

I tried everything on this forum and others. What worked was moving my second HD to a different controller. I now get 550MB/s for large files and 50-100MB/s for tons of small ones. That's up from around 5-15 MB/s.

Also, the drastic drop people experience right after their copying starts is probably from repeated attempts and the first few gigs being cached up in DRAM. For example, my copying would slow down after 4 gigs were copied, and that's the amount of DRAM my 860 EVO has.

Finally, benchmarks like CrystalDiskMark won't give you an accurate test for HD to HD transfers. It copies to the system RAM then back in two separate steps, not between two drives at once. That's not testing any bottlenecks that come from having both HDs on the same controller.

Good luck. I know everyone has different reasons for the slow transfer speeds.
