100% Disk for minutes after Startup

My laptop, when it boots up, is very slow.
Looking at Task Manager, DISK is at 100% for a very long time.

    Is this normal?

No single process is dominating usage and the top task changes over time.
If it will help, I'll record the task using the most the next time I start up.

Almost all apps are disabled in startup...just hardware and security apps are enabled

I have a tower too and this isn't a problem....I'm able to start working within 15 seconds of booting up.

    Ideads?

What do you mean a very long time?

I find that Skype app and OneDrive are top of the list after booting (whether you use them or not) but only for a minute or so.

It would be interesting if you can see what your processes are.

You need to replace the mechanical HDD with a SSD.

You can do a startup boot trace. Most likely it is your Antivirus taking over. You can use Process Explorer in place if Task Manager to find the sub-process in question.

    complicated.
I'm going to prevent Avast from launching at startup and see if that makes a difference.

I shut down and restarted a few times.
The heavy disk processes are Avast and Skype.
In the Startup tab of Task Manager, Skype is disabled. ?why is it starting then?
And, in Startup, I can't disable Avast.

From pressing the start button to Disk usage dropping below 100% was a bit over 4 minutes. This was much shorter than when I started up 1st thing today

Sounds like you have both legacy Skype and the Windows 10 Skype app.

The Windows 10 Skype app always starts at boot even if you have never once opened it (and doesn't show in Task Manager startup tab). The only option I know to stop this is to uninstall it. It is worth a try - you can always install it again if it doesn't help.

Another annoying one one is Photos but you can disable that in background apps in settings.

100% disk usage for 5-10 min, yes that is normal, occasionally. Some Windows or application process is going on, you can usually see what it is roughly in the Task Manager.
Windows Defender/Avast scan/updates, indexing, Prefetch, Super Prefetch, disc optimisation, update things, etc.

I would uninstall instances of Skype and re-install the App from the MS Store, this is Skype App installed on mine. I don't use it and it is not disabled or is it in the Startup, no bother, same for OneDrive which I do use, but not the sync facility.
Skype version 8.46.0.60 Application version 14.46.60.0
Sign On, Configure settings, scores of them, Sign out.

I would also go thru all your Windows Settings as regards Background Apps only enable what you use. Web Browsers can preemptively load pages that sort of thing I switch off.

"I also found a setting in Avast that starts it only after other system processes have completed "
I used Avast many years ago and used that setting as it interfered with the loading of Task Bar items on the far right.
