Also, as i have a SSD for Windows installation and HDD for data, and I have made some junctions and user folders relocations, are these going to be remained? What about the windows settings (page file on HDD, windows temp etc)?

Thank you everyone for your hard work on this fix. I, too, had a heck of a time chasing down corruption problem. Downloading latest MS iso file and creating a DVD worked perfectly. All applications, folders and settings remained intact, clean sfc scannow and DISM working properly. Much faster than running sfc and dism checks over and over...
Hi, I upgraded for free in July and about 5 weeks after I started getting bizarre grey screen at login. i have found many fixes here and there, but, being somewhat low tech (at least compared to computer techs), I did not want to play around with more complicated fixes when I winnowed everything down to my "final" error in the DISM which is exactly as you report it. Here is what, somewhat incredibly, cleared it up and it's super easy. I ran the windows trouble-shooter updater 2 different times from IE and Edge and then ran these two commands, per suggestions on another forum, in order: Try these in order---
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
After the first updater troubleshooter, it fixed some files, but still same message, after second, 100% successful-no errors. I may have just gotten lucky, but my logic was that if WU troubleshooter could find errors every time (and it, too, is presumably being updated) and if somehow the browser it is run on makes a difference, then maybe enough repairs would fix the problem of the moment (until hopefully all these many bugs can be worked out!)
Came here from a link on another forum. Had similar problems with W10 when installing Open Office. Tried most of the stuff on this topic without success. Finally used the Mircosoft Media Creation Tool at -http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/C/8/1C8BAF5C-9B7E-44FB-A90A-F58590B5DF7B/v2.0/MediaCreationToolx64.exe
No need for disc image or flash drive. Just hours waiting, there is even a message about sit back and relax!
Previously repairing XP or W7 from a disc you were given options to repair or clean install, now you have an option to keep apps ( why cant they just say programes?) I was worried in case I lost anything but everything was present and Open Office installed OK.

Yes I did it and it worked. No refresh, no clean install. Upgrading Windows 10 within Windows 10 made the infamous error: 0x800f081f go away. One word of caution though is to use a brand new downloaded Media Creation tool from Microsoft's site in order to create the Windows.iso file and then burn it to a DVD. I also think it is a good idea to use Windows' own integrated burning tool and not a third party app. That can be done right after the creation of the Windows.iso file while one is still in the dialog box asking to burn the .iso image now.
This is the result of sfc /scannow after the in place upgrade within Windows 10:

If you have Build 10586 installed as your current Host OS
and need to do a repair install - Re-installation
Mount the 10586 Setup Media ISO or USB and run Setup.exe from within the 10586 Host OS
Basically your upgrading the 10586 Host OS with the 10586 Setup Media -
which gives you a fresh re-write of the 10586 OS (a REFRESH of the OS)

OK, I have the most recent Windows Update for Win10 (there have been several Win10 updates I noticed over the last few weeks.... My most recent Win10 update is the: Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3124200).
The original Win10 upgrade was the free offering from Microsoft (from my previous Win7) so I don't have any program disks.
- Is there a way to get the Setup Media ISO from an installation without external disks?
- Also, the Refresh you are talking about, does it do that without affecting programs? Have too many to want to re-install them all (I don't worry about data as I always save data to separate hard drives and usually disconnect them when I am playing with the OS

I not the most computer savy when it comes to the software side, although I have built about 15 PC's, so I 'know enough to be dangerous', lol.

Sorry for being late to give you an answer. I also saw that "kyhi" gave you instructions on how to go about a repair install and I think that's not what you want to do. If you go that route, you will have to reinstall all your data files. Now, having said that, If you do want to upgrade Windows 10 within Win 10 like I did, follow instead these instructions:
-After burning your .iso files from the downloaded Media Creation Tool, leave the DVD inside the CD-DVD drive and don't reboot.
-Open windows Explorer and double-click on the CD-DVD drive, which should open a new window with all the files you have just burned. Look for the setup.exe file and double-click on it. That should start the installation of Windows 10. Let it run till the end, which normally takes a while.
-When the installation is thorough, remove the DVD from the CD-DVD drive, reboot your PC and run sfc /scannow again to see if you still have the dreadful error (0x800f081f). If not, that means the upgrade was successful. All you have to do at this point is finally to check for new Windows Updates.
One last word of caution is to make sure you have a good system image backup before starting.
