I am getting this also :)

Also on folders with a lot of mkv videos it takes ages to show anything - green bar slowly moving at top - this is on SSD (windows 7 was instant!!)

I am noticing the lag in opening the Start menu / page, also a bigger lag when opening the Notifications area.

But worst is the super blinding fast Edge browser which, on first startup, takes up to a second to display my Favourites.

Surely parts of the OS and apps that users are guaranteed to be using should be optimised a bit better!

    Fixed! (for me, at least)

Hi, gang -- I just registered an account with Windows Ten Forums just so I could post this! I'm no programmer whatsoever, but I figured this out.

I was having a 0.8 to 1.2 second delay each and every time I clicked the start button in Windows 10, Home Edition x64 (public release - Sept. 2015). Nothing I did, including eliminating Cortana permanently through some heavy-handed registry and filename manipulations, could eliminate this delay.

Here's what just worked (very much to my surprise -- I'm dumb!):

I learned from this forum that SearchUI.exe may be the culprit, as it runs each time I click the start button, then it quickly goes away again. So I did a search for searchui.exe in my c:\windows directory. Several results came up. I tried to rename each SearchUI.exe, one at a time, to SearchUI-.exe (adding a hyphen) so that Windows couldn't find and then run the file. No luck on the first 5 files named that.

Then, on the 6th and final file in that list (all of them were named SearchUI.exe), I was able to rename the file! So I did so and VOILA!!! The Windows 10 Start Button has zero lag or delay now! No side effects I've noticed, either!

This is the location of the file that I renamed so Windows couldn't find it and run it:

    C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\SearchUI.exe

I hope that helps some other frustrated, OCD souls out there. It's working like a charm (no offense, Windows 8.0!) now.

Be well and thank you all!

This issue can be resloved by removing the Cortana package, see here
However, when I attempt I get an error saying it can't be uninstalled on a per-user basis (I do have 3 accounts on this PC)
Any ideas anyone as this resolution looks like it might fix it in the menatime?

Three Verified Cases with Separate Hardware

    Hello,

I have seen up to 10 seconds of delay when hitting the start button and attempting to type a search querry. The issue manifests with serious lag - I can sometimes type a word or two, then wait 10 seconds until the rest of what I've typed shows up in the search bar. I've seen this issue on three separate computers, listed below.

Dell Optiplex 990 SFF running Win 10 home. The cpu is an i7-2600 @ 3.4 GHz, and I have 2x4 GB of DDR3 with a wimpy (though capable enough to drive two 1080 p monitors) Radeon HD 6450 graphics card.

Dell Optiplex 7xx series (this is older hardware)

Some kind of enterprise no-name integrated i5 box with decent hardware.

I am not running a whole lot of extra software. For the sake of comparison, I am running the following programs on all three computers, with various other software running on each:

    Team Viewer
    Insync

All three computers show the same issue, though the i7 lags a bit less than the other two. Sometimes the dual core oldie lags for 40 seconds before the text I've typed shows up. Once the system lags once, it doesn't lag again until the computer has been unattended for a while.

    I've tried the reset method

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

and rebuilding the index, as well as various other tweaks (sfc check, system image rebuild, turning windows search to automatic start etc), and nothing is a permanent fix. It may be worthwhile to note that I do NOT have this issue on my windows 10 pro tablet (surface), and three of the devices mentioned are using different Microsoft accounts.

Anyone have any luck on this, or notice any patterns I'm missing?

Yes, this works. I've previously removed Cortana, but this was still an issue. As an update note, on 25-Oct-2016 Windows self repaired this "missing" file (which I only renamed) - it added it back. If you notice your start menu is opening slowly (and I run my Win10-64 off an SSD), check this option again - it works.
