I recently installed A Samsung 970 Pro M.2. When I first did the clean install, Samsung Magician reported 0.4 TBW. Needless to say, I had to install the rest of my programs that I normally use to include anti-virus, after which Magician reported about a 1.2 TBW. I did install 1 game and Magician reported a 1.4 TBW. I normally use my computer every day but no writing to the SSD, just normal stuff like internet and reading and sometimes the game. I went from a 1.4 TBW last week to a 2.1 TBW being reported as of the writing of this question. That is a 0.7 TBW within a weeks time. I've looked at Task Manager and it seems as if the "System" as reported by task manager is constantly accessing the disk. I realize that an anti-virus program will be scanning and if you're on the internet, your anti-virus will be watching as well. So my question would be: why is the "System" accessing the drive? I understand the concept that if you "save" anything it will write to the drive, but there is no "saving". I guess you could call it "my busy light" is constantly showing the drive active yet, I will exit certain programs that I know will access the drive but this doesn't seem to help. I'm attaching a screenshot of "Disk Activity" as reported by Task Manager. It's rather obvious that Chrome would be reported as I am using Chrome and Snagit as I'm using it to take the screenshot, but why all are the others being reported when not in use? I would love to catch what's writing to the disk but have no knowledge as to how to do that. If anybody might have any suggestions as to how to do that I would greatly appreciate it. Basically what I'm saying is, the drive is being written to without any input by myself. I had a Samsung Evo, 1 TB, and I never, to my recollection, seen anything like this and the programs that I have on my computer at the present are the same as I had on the Evo. Perhaps there is no way to stop, or at least, get rid of some of these disks eaters but it would be nice to know why this is happening.

dalchina: Actually in regards to memory I have 32gig installed and here's a screenshot of the memory usage. I just wanted to clarify that. In regards to your link you posted, I'll be more than happy to take a look at it and see if it can help. I believe that some of the usages could come from programs reaching out and see if there are any updates to that program but sitting here and actually watching disk usage, it seems to me it's more at the system level than anything else ie: Windows itself. If I have to I'll just uninstall all the programs that I see reaching out and seeing if I might have allowed access from the program to the vendor. Most of the time I would say that people allow auto updates but I have no idea if any program that doesn't have an update would write to the drive.

Seams as if doing a clean boot and then disabling a couple of programs at startup has, for some reason, slowed disk usage down quite a bit. For the past two days, I've been at 2.1TBW which is great. I don't know if disabling those programs at startup or just the clean boot had anything to do with it but whatever happened worked. It's rather strange how you see disk usage on an SSD drive where you pay no attention to it on a mechanical drive. There was a time there that if I couldn't figure out what was going on, even though I spent a bunch of bucks for the SSD, I'd just go back to a mechanical drive and not worry about it. But now that it's fixed, different story.

Its probably do to system restore points. But you can download space sniffer and it'll let you know where all your space is going.

zbook: Have learned that optimizing SSD's is rather moot. I've done enough reading about them and finally concluded that the SSD is far better than mechanical however due to the fact that SSD's are a little more expensive, especially when you get to the 1TB and beyond and depending on which manufacturer you choose and in Samsungs case Pro or regular SSD, will depend on the cost. I still use the WD Passport as data drives only because of their small size and I'm just used to them. My only problem is trying to find out WHY I'm loosing TBW's even when the system is idle. Sometimes it'll just sit there and do nothing, other times it works like a dog. I realize that Antivirus programs will do scanning of the system but if you open the Task Manager>Performance>Open Resource Monitor you will find in the Disk Window, you'll find all kinds of stuff writing to the drive i.e.: Registry, System and needless to say, as I have Chrome open, Chrome is there. I've also identified programs that love to use disk space, for one, if you use Nvidia drivers and install the Nvidia package, it just loves to keep your disk moving. The thing is, in the idle state, other than possibly your Antivirus program, nothing should be happening, there is no input for anything to use disk space, yet Windows loves to keep in touch with Microsoft.
