    alienware curiously cooler

Turning an alienware into a custom build can happen.
    An unexpected thing happened.

Suppose it's a fan thing, but,
(this thread includes cooling issues ?)

I got this new thing, brandy new top o line alien17r3,
noticed it was running normally with animated wallpaper to 55c and up to 70c ...

thought this was a little warm,
most online comments suggested lappies run warm,
    especially game lappies.

This game lappy would easily run up to 70c ...
and then top off with the fan running.
Using "core temp" , it displayed high temps with high watt usage
at idle and minimal use (no stress)
or what seemed to be high watt @ 10 to 20 watt out of 45 with this skylake 6700 cpu.

Stress testing to 100% the cpu topped @ 72c to 85c - no higher

The more watt use the hotter the cpu got.
So, as strange as it seems,
I was inside the lappy looking around and wanted to test the system with no fan.

... it booted up silently, ok (with a disconnected fan).

So then I ran core temp,
    and to my amazement,
the cpu watt use dropped 20 watts to .4 or less than 1 watt.

The cpu temps dropped from about or near 70c to 37c with the fan NOT RUNNING (disconnected).

    Go Figure ! ? !

It could be the CPU is automatically throttling itself down because it got too hot without the fan...less CPU = less heat.

    Oddly enough, just the opposite.
(OR, maybe you meant to say - too hot with the fan running)

This cpu engineering design on the alienware motherboard
seems to have the FAN connected to the cpu power supply.

Disconnect the FAN from the cpu (intel mobile 6700 skylake) and the cpu almost runs cold.

Almost 3 am east coast US ... got to go

UPDATE: This Alienware 17R3 has 2 fans.

Reconnected BOTH. BOTH fans are running.

The system can tolerate heat much better.
This system has 2 video processors and is a very awesome device.

NOW running Windows 10 LTSB ...
NO APPS, no Cortana, NO Edge, NO STORE, no ANYTHING.
10 LTSB is by default ALL DESKTOP ONLY.
    Windows 10 Enterprise - Version 1607 - Build 14393 Anniversary
