    How to Overclock i5-4690k properly

    Hey guys,

I am currently trying to get the most out of my processor at this point because I feel like I get poor performance from my games even though my system isn't a horrible set up. However overclocking is just something I have never dabbled in myself so I am looking to the guidance of those who are familiar in it,
I did a bit of reading and installed some programs including cpu-z just to confirm my settings after I tinkered around in my BIOS, I believe I achieved 4.2GHZ I didn't change much in my bios other than setting the frequency to about 4200mhz I didn't adjust the voltage I left it at 1.200 I am uncertain if I should bump it up to 1.3 or just leave it as is.

UPDATE : It was alright until I started playing Titanfall 2 I was able to play for 10 minutes and then a new match for a minute and I got a blank blue screen with nothing on it and I reset everything back to default in BIOS.

My specs are as below :
    Windows 10
    CPU - I5-4690k
    Motherboard - MSI Z97 gaming 5
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM set as a frequency of 1866mhz
    MSI R9 390 8GB
    750 watt Corsair powersupply
    2TB HDD
    128GB SSD

    Thanks in advance.

OC'ing a CPU is not an exact science.....as everyone's hardware is different. When OC'ing a CPU.....the first and foremost piece of hardware is a top of the line CPU cooler. Otherwise you risk damaging the CPU. Your Evo 212 is a great aftermarket cooler, I have one on my setup, it isn't really designed for OC'ing. For Air cooled OC'ing you need to look at Nactua otherwise you need to start looking at a AIO water cooled CPU cooler.

As for OC'ing....since you have a MSI mobo, you should look at using Afterburner, which is an MSI product. This will give you the basic intro for OC'ing. It also has some tutorials you can look at.

Afterburner will work for the GPU, for the CPU have a good read here

Yea I have afterburner but it seems to lock up my computer whenever I try to start the program so I had left it alone.
@Dude Thanks i'll have a read on that.

Do you have the MSI Gaming App installed? That causes problems with Afterburner for some people

No I think I may have had an outdated MSI version, I have it working but wouldn't it be on par with AMD Crimson's gpu settings?

Someone else will have to answer that, I have no experience with AMD Crimson

The only thing you should do to OC your CPU is raise the Turbo speed to where you want it, there is no reason to have a continuous OC.

Not sure why you teamed up an AMD card with an Intel CPU, go nVidia

Doug is using an older 3770K (still a fine cpu) and teamed it up with a GTX 1070 and has gotten great results.

When it comes to bluescreens, I personally think it`s a driver issue, how long have you had the card ?

If you are not happy with it, sell it.

Tommy (Solarstarshines) knows a lot about AMD GPU`s maybe he could give you some advice, and he also knows alot about OCing

It's just personal preference I've never liked Nvidia cards. I have already overclocked my graphics card prior to dabbling in the CPU over clocking. The blue screen came from an unstable overclock on the CPU as my temps ran too high while I was playing a game.

At idle with oc genie on in the msi bios it has brought my CPU from 3.5ghz to 4.00ghz and now my idle temps went from 30 degrees to about 42 degrees upping my max load to about 50-60 degrees depending on my room temperature.

The only other problem with the CPU is I find it using 50 percent load even at idle which could also be an attributing factor.
