I thought the Ti was the better option ?
    GTX 780TI > GTX 780

    GTX 980TI > GTX 980

    GTX 980TI > GTX Titan

GTX Titan Black > GTX Titan

GTX Titan Z > GTX Titan Black

And now for 2016, the new king! GTX 1080 > GTX Titan Z, GTX Titan, GTX Titan Black, and GTX 980TI.

If you already had GTX 980TI, than there's no need to upgrade, because the GTX 980TI price = GTX 1080 price.

So upgrading from my GTX 650Ti I may as well go for the GTX 980Ti

You will notice major huge performance jump from 650TI to 980TI, and the 980TI can handle 4k really well.

Ya, for the original configuration of this Alienware I chose ATI 5870's in crossfire. They were little work horses. When I upgraded video, I chose two ATI 7970. If I remember correctly, I couldn't believe they each took 2.5 slots, not 2. 2.5, you're kidding, I needed slots 1 and 3 for 16x so returned the 7970's and got Nvidia 770's.

I considered 480's in crossfire when upgrading in June. Sorry, not with the state of MGPU gaming (especially DX12) these days. So single GPU for me and decided to go with the performance king at the time, Pascal 1080. Priced high, but no regrets. It actually cost a bit less than what I paid for my two 770's a few years back yet out performs those two cards big time. AMD is fine though on a performance/dollar scale.

I'm late to this conversation but if I were Stephanie or had her configuration, I'd be with Essenbe on this and go with a 1070 rather than Maxwell, simply because there is no question that drivers will be optimized for Pascal for sometime, along with DX12 improvements/support. As a Kepler owner for a long time, I know the pain of driver optimization being focused on newer hardware.

But in the end, gaming, hardware choices is about fun and trying things out. As long as one has looked at all the facts, there is no wrong decision IMHO.
