Monitoring outbound traffic but not traffic on my local network

I was recently looking at my internet usage and noticed my uploads are insanely high. Some traffic like email and browser activity is expected, bit not 20GB a day.

I've virus checked my PC and it's clean.
I've looked at traffic monitors, such as netmeter, but it includes LAN traffic.

Is there any free software that I can use that can monitor data sent out to the Internet, and preferably would track it by destination IP.

    thanks

There is several methods Net limiter is an easier method to use it can show you per application bandwidth.

You would need to run OpenWRT or start looking at individual devices.

Where are you looking? If it's usage detected by or billed by your ISP then their figures could be wrong. I had a contract with a cap and never exceeded that cap but suddenly I started to get charged (billed) for exceeding that cap by significant amounts.

I switched off router and used another computer elsewhere to log into my account with my ISP and it showed that I was currently using data (even thought the router was switched off). I complained and they said it was down to a phenomenon known as cross line jumping and refunded me.

Assuming they are looking at their roundup on their internet account.

If they are using the standard ISP Router 3rd party firmware won't be an option its viable if they have their own Router of course.
Assuming here because they never specified.

Something like Net limiter or any several options out there will show outgoing bandwidth per application, if flashing firmware to the router is not option then go this route. You would need to install it on all computers connected to the network and then in a procedural manner rule each one out.

20gb a day is a lot of upload if you are not actually uploading anything like media intentionally.

Yes, was looking at the usage data on my ISP account. I know they tend to inflate the data somewhat, but 20GB?...

I tried a few programs like net balancer, net limiter (the latter of which thrashes the hell out of my CPU).

While looking at that data I spotted something else worrying... a persistent inbound connection from naj.sk. So I ran MBAM to see if I had any malware... Nothing detected. But I haven't been able to block the connection in the router, Windows firewall, and even blocking it with Net Limiter didn't work.

So before I worry about why my ISP is reporting absurd upload amounts I think I need to deal with this potential malware that no A/V software has been able to detect (Comodo, Kaspersky, MBAM etc).

My ASUS router is on the latest firmware. I keep it updated. Merlin 386.12
Windows is on patch 4046 (Feb 2024).

    Damn straight!

I send my brother an email that is 30mb in size once a week and I do occasionally share some public domain documentaries, but they are typically less than a GB.

note: I probably shouldn't stress over this as I have an unlimited account, but it just irks me that they are alleging I sent 20GB per day..

    - Block that ip in the windows host file so it resolve to localhost if you think its suspect and then investigate further. Sorry not long woke up.

    - Reset your external IP for the router

There is definitely something going on like a crypto miner or botnet or something. Just because there is no detection its hard to define in this case becasue a incoming connection does not automatically mean Malware by definition like it can but the actual issue won't detect as one in all cases.

20gb a day is suspect and not normal if you are not actually uploading anything intentionally. Most net activities use very little bandwidth you would have to be sending Movies or renders or some sort of large media daily to even get close to 20gb a day.

    - Process Explorer use this and look for apps that are using high memory even windows host processes, you can look at the properties window for each process and look for remote connections and try to narrow it down this way.

outside of that it gets more involved.

I guess also you would want to rule out things like p2p clients although less common today or areas like cloud backup or anything that syncs to the cloud and sends data.

Do what i did and switch off your router especially if you are away for the day. Then log into your account from another computer and check that day's usage (or current usage). If it show you are using data when not home then it's a line fault.

I stay as far away from cloud services as I can. Except for my emails which are collected every 5 minutes using POP and "delete from pop server" I don't store any personal information in the cloud. I don't use mobile devices either. So that rules out syncing.

I'm going to visit my sons on Sunday. That's a 3 hour drive each way perfect opportunity to leave the router off all day :)
