Cat5 Extended Run - Is it as EASY as THIS?

    Hey all...

I recently moved into a new place--a "Granny Flat" behind my landlord's residence. Internet service is included (huge benefit) but it's included via her modem/router's WiFi. The signal quality is alright--it's not great, it's not horrible--but in a nutshell, I had forgotten why I generally HATE WiFi: it's just slow.

I had a Netgear extender already in my bag of tricks that I'm using which has boosted the signal tremendously, but it's still slow.

My place is close enough to the landlord's that it would be fairly simple to run a conduit across the yard and fish a cable through it, connecting my PC directly, leaving other devices (IoT stuff, phone, etc.) using WiFi.

My question is simply regarding the feasibility of the run. I'm guessing the actual distance is >60ft but I've already got a 100' Cat5 Ethernet Cable so I'll use that if possible, and obviously before going to the trouble of digging a trench and going through walls I'll test it by running the cable out the windows or something similar. This all seems pretty straightforward to me, which is usually a sign, in my world, that I've overlooked something critically important. Is anyone out there jumping up and down, screaming, "NOOOOO! Don't do it, you dork!?"

No....it's perfectly fine. The max distance for Cat5(e) is 300 feet. Your 60 to 100 feet is no problem. I did the same thing at my old place.....from one end of the house to the other as wifi G back then was 54 Mbps. So the 10/100/1000 LAN port was best. My run was right around 60 to 70 feet. Like you I bought a 100 foot roll. I just left the rest under the house tied up neatly to a floor truss.

    Maybe

This applies if they are separate structures. If they are in the same structure disregard.
If both buildings are on the same electrical ground you can do it. If each building has it's own ground don't do it.

What does the building's ground have to do with a CAT5 Ethernet connectioin?

. We always tried to use fiber between buildings if possible.

What granny suite will have a separate hydro service? If you were talking about audio you might have a ground loop problem, I've never seen an issue with Ethernet, ever. Ground loop faults are more usual with powered devices and a result of poor ground isolation in a device causing a potential difference between the chassis ground and earth ground.
