Sharing permissions and access from another PC

    Hi all,

I'm sure I'm missing something really simple but so far I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure this out and have all but given up and was hoping someone here might be able to give me some advice?

I currently have three PCs (Two Win10s and a Win7) on a local network and would like to set up a shared folder on one that allows the other two to have access to read/write while everyone else only gets read access. I have tried various suggestions online, including HomeGroups and the advanced user security/shared permissions but so far with testing I can only seem to give everyone permissions or no one. All three currently only have local accounts.

Is what I'm trying to do actually possible? It would seem to me to be a simple request to do yet I can't get my head around it.

    Thanks,
    IC

You cannot set permissions per machine, you have to set them per user or group instead. The user(s) and group(s) you give permissions must be present (active and enabled) on the computer in question.

An example. I have shared a folder, given everyone the read rights:

On the machine where this shared folder is I have a user kari@AnMSAccountEmail.com. For this user I have given full rights:

I can also give special rights to any group. Here I grant all administrator accounts of this PC the full right. All standard user accounts would then fall under Everyone, only having the read rights:

Really simple, works like a dream (at least I have no sharing issues on any of my Windows 10 machines).

I have been going crazy all morning troubleshooting my sharing problem. I built a home server with an external 4tb hd. I want all the computers on my network to back up to this drive. My wife's 2 laptops just could not access that drive. FINALLY I did network and sharing troubleshooting on my home server pc. It turns out my home server pc had the windows firewall on, blocking other users, even thought I set up the home group as wide open.
    stupid old firewall
it all works now but man what a waste of time
