Interesting. Do you have any idea what SMB version your router is running? I would guess V1, and that would match the results that were reported earlier in this thread.

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm your setup, because I have a Windows only network. Like I reported before, when I disable V2 and V3 on my Windows 2012 R2 server, the problem also was gone. Of course, this does NOT imply that Windows 2012 R2 is the cause of this problem!

    Hello Bart,

I'm not sure about SMB, I tried to interrogate my Livebox router, but I didn't find anything about SMB. In fact the router is a combined router/internet interface (from Orange France), using the DHCP server protocol to assign the various IP addresses through Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/Ipv4). In the router interface setup page I specified the computer names in association with the addresses. Every member is linked by ethernet.

Then, remembering something I did when the network was still using Windows XP, I thought about the Master Browser issue and the need to first start the device to become Master Browser and then the rest. Since the router is almost always switched on, shutting down/starting the other members of the network would not change the Master Browser. Anyway, I lack the detailed knowledge about network parameters, other than setting up the network adapter settings (almost all default settings), so I am quite happy with the fact that it seems to work and that I can now see all members of the network (workgroup) from every other member. I will probably soon buy a small simple laptop running Windows 10, so that would give me even more possibilities to check.

    Best regards,

    Wim

What I understand from the information on Internet about the Orange Livebox, is that it is NOT a fileserver for Windows networks, and it does NOT speak any SMB protocol. So I do not think that it can act as a Windows browser, let alone Master browser. Please correct me if I am wrong!

But if I am right, Your situation is entirely different from what I have, and I don't feel confident to say anything useful here.

In any case, the workgroup must be the same for all devices. If you mix workgroups you can still access the devices if you type the IP or device name and shared folder (such as \\devicename\folder) but you cannot see them on the network. Not sure if the SMB version has any effect. Shouldn't newer versions be backwards compatible?

Well, the problem with the SMB version only came up in Windows 10 build 10565 or later. On all other and earlier versions of windows, there was always downward compatibility. Partners use the highest SMB version available on both sides.

I have not seen anything from Microsoft about this problem. Did anyone else see something?

Probably this is a security bug in Windows 10. Any expert can tell us the correct settings or a workaround (other than setting SMB to version 1) ?

    *SOLUTION*
I discovered that my server on the network had defaulted to smb2. I changed the server to smb1, and yikes everything appeared under Network in Win 10 Pro 64. It seems any networked computer not on smb1 will cause all network browse to fail.
This solution worked perfect for me

Yes, I have read about this fix. But I think this is a security bug in Windows 10. Apparently changing the SMB version to 1 relaxes some security restrictions and you can see all the devices, while setting that to version 2 or 3 applies stricter settings and affects network discovery.

You're probably very right. After some more checking I realise I should have posted my solution to another thread, I don't have a network using Windows Server (so indeed without the SMB protocol), but just a LAN using the DHCP protocol. But what I did find out is that the Master browser issue does play a role. I tried various settings again and to have the network fully operational the Master browser should not be one of the PC's that can go through a shutdown/startup cycle, but rather the router which stays on almost permanently.

No, you have posted to the right thread "Windows 10 1511 Network Browsing Issue". Most of us are small LAN users with no Microsoft servers, just various versions of Windows on a DHCP like you. Here's a question for the experts: Can those of us with access to group policy, change all computers on our network (vista or higher) to SMB1? A registry solution would be just as good. Please provide a clue where to look.
