Upgraded 7 to 10 and now can't connect to Billion 7401VGP-M router

I thought it was a driver issue but I've updated drivers afaik and still no joy. The router is sitting a metre away from me but the HP Probook 4730s cannot see it. It sees my 5 neighbours' routers but not mine. I need ideas on what to look at to fix this. Currently connected via a wireless hotspot.

Hello Gatorau Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Ironically I have a 7 Home Premium laptop that just saw upgraded to 10 running not into connection problems but a bad install where things were missing! That seems to be typically seen more so from 7 to 10 then from 8 or 8.1 to 10 being closer in the version numbers.

The real connection problem concerning wireless however was seen with another 7 desktop that uses a usb WiFi plugin type adapter to connect through the router that sees no 10 drivers available for1 Yet 7 won't connect to the ISP modem/router by ethernet on the 10/7 dual boot seen there. The case is a mini tower I can move around for temporary set ups.

At you are able to connect while both 10 and 7 alike pick up on nearby home networks which indicate others with the same ISP. If 10 isn't detecting the original set up if the router has a firewall where you put a user name and password for example you may want to consider the clean install option at this time where the fresh clean install won't be buggy but properly detect the router you have there. I had several problems here initially between two desktops and laptop all resolved quickly by taking that route.

Thank you for the kind welcome and the speedy response to my angst laden post. :)

I have the clean install waiting here on a USB stick for installation.

I'm just now trying to work out how to change the boot order so that it will boot from the USB. Please refer my signature for explanation as to why this is an issue.

You may or may not run into the UEFI problem and be forced to use the Legacy USB type boot in order to boot live from the flash drive. This is an area the clean install and upgrade guides get into there. Since you won't be running the later Upgrade again look over the steps in the clean install guide.

Here the laptop I upgraded to 10 bought as a gift for someone back in 2012 does not even see a boot device menu but will detect a bootable dvd in the optical drive?!

The clean install along with first seeing to the upgrade had to be done the old way of seeing a dvd install or otherwise bring over the iso and unpack files and still end needing the disk for the clean installs that followed when going from 32bit 7 to 64bit 10 the long way! One upgrade followed by two clean installs one being the 32bit to verify a clean install would activate to be followed by the 64bit clean install. The upgrade came out buggy anyways!

The clean install is done and the laptop still can't see the router. I'm thinking of adding white cane and dark glasses to the setup and yelling "It's right there!". Confounded by it.

When you say it can't "see the router", do you mean that the Wireless SSID the router is broadcasting does not show up in the list of available wireless network?

Asking because in Win8.1, the Network and Sharing Center shows my router in the diagram at the top, between the PC and the Internet. But, in Win10, the Network and Sharing Center shows no router at all -- and I know it's there because I'm using the same PC.

So, I'm trying to find out WHERE you are not "seeing it".

It is not showing in the list of Available Wi-Fi Networks. I am currently hardwired to the router via Ethernet cable. When I say not seen, I mean the laptop does not discover my router to enable my connection without a cable.

There were several network items just a little while ago when getting another clean install of 10 on. Before you see the final stages of the installation you will be prompted to select one out of all detected networks where you select one you can connect by. Typically that would be the one you would be using if you have a desktop or other laptop.

It wasn't showing during the installation. I had an issue with a Windows update on Windows 7 a number of months back. It wanted to update the Ralink adapter on the laptop. I said yes and, of course, my net connection then failed, so I rolled it back using System Restore. I have a feeling that this has now updated because of the W10 installation but I don't know now how to roll it back.

You have to review the update history and be able to identify the correct driver install since 10 is a bit different! It grabs before asking if you want them during the installation as soon as it gets connected which you are saying isn't happening. The previous update was likely one for 8 or 8.1 which caused a problem on 7 while you now seem to be needing that in order to see 10 connect.

It's kind of like a "Catch 22" situation where you can't do without it at the same time you previously couldn't do with it but still need to find a way to get it on! Another problem is finding that the last firmware update was seen on February 17, 2010! You likely have a G type dsl router there while 10 is picking up on nearby N type! You may simply have to buy a new N type. The support page with driver updates is seen at Billion Products for SSL VPN, ADSL Modem/Router, Wireless ADSL Router, Powerline ADSL Router and Adapter, VoIP ADSL Modem/Router, Security Router, Broadband Router, SHDSL Bridge/Router, iBusiness Security, ISDN Product

    1. Items in grey are models that are no longer sold.
    2. Blue are coming soon.
    3. * indicates maximum throughput is 14Mbits in Router mode.
Obviously the model you have was discontinued as you can see from the notation I found on another support page that shows which model has support for ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+ seen at Billion Products for SSL VPN, ADSL Modem/Router, Wireless ADSL Router, Powerline ADSL Router and Adapter, VoIP ADSL Modem/Router, Security Router, Broadband Router, SHDSL Bridge/Router, iBusiness Security, ISDN Product

And this is where most of your problem is stemming from since nothing newer was released for 8 even. The model you have there was Vista/7 happy but now simply won't cooperate with the new Windows. "time to make the doughnuts!" and off in the running you are to the Billion store to look over.... what you will need apparently!

Don't feel bad once the ISP here upgraded the modem I was using and then went out to buy a better one separately to run that they offered phone line as part of the three way package deal and that saw a totally new one make the old G type router useless while the newer N type saw the advantage of a firewall added! So things actually worked out for the best!
