    Avira is antivirus-
I am running Avira antivirus and Windows Firewall on the laptop, and AVG Internet Security on the PC.
I disabled all of the above in order to see if one of these was causing the issue, as you suggested, by process of elimination. I don't know how or why but strangely this process itself seems to have fixed the problem... I have all three security programmes running again and the laptop is now picking up the PC! (both of which are now wireless)

I would have suspected the AVG Internet Security on the PC as most likely the PC was blocking. Probably when you disabled and reenabled the security software, it saw the new IP address on your network and automatically added exceptions to allow traffic through. Glad everything's back to normal.

    Hi there.

update: Since resolving the problem, the network has been temperamental.... It seems my laptop only lets me access the PC on the network when it feels like! lol I don't know why, but sometimes it works other times it see's the PC but won't allow me access. I'm thinking this could be a hardware problem??

After several attempts I'm still struggling to get the printer to work. I have the printer connected wirelessly AND wired to the PC, so it's as if I have 2 printers (incase I have any WiFi problems) but no printer is showing up on the Network. I've done all the usual set up printer processes on the laptop but now I'm completely stuck! Can you help?

This might sound like a daft question... but do I need to install drivers for the printer on the laptop as well as the PC?

I'd lean towards avg internet security still being the issue. Disable it for a while (a day or so) and see how your network behaves while it is disabled.
