Near Share is horribly slow!!!I

What speed is Nearby Share supposed to run? Both of my laptops have wifi card capable of at least 300mbps date transfer but it seems like Nearby Share is running at like 1-2 mbps. is it trying to do it over BT? I thought it's supposed to be over the wifi directly between the two laptops?

MS can try to copy Apples but they are still crap at implementation. Airdrop on Apples allow max speed over wifi between two devices.

Or am I doing something wrong or missing something?

Both laptops running fairly recent windows 10. one is running 1809 the other 1903

There are so many factors to this. What download speeds do you get as that's a guide to performance? File copy can be effected by either pc having a heavey CPU usage by other things. Other network activity like updates,anti virus scanning files as they are copied, low signal strength, slow hard drive the list goes on. It's a matter of eliminating problems

I have 90mb/20mb cable and would get that speed if i do speed test on both laptops on wifi. . both have ssd with no other process running in background. both laptop are like right next to each other, about 6ft apart.

It doesn't really matter what my internet speed is because this nearby sharing is supposed to be ad hoc wifi transfer directly between two laptops that only need BT to establish handshakes as i understand it? or am i missing something? The speed it was transfering was like around 1.7-2.0mbps, more like BT speed rather than wifi speed.

Anyone using nearby sharing before on laptops and can add what speed they are seeing?

If i set up both laptops to using the same local area network over wifi (ie just regular file transfer between laptops via local network), the speed basically max out at my equipment speed, around 300mbit

You gotta be effin kidding me? ;( wtf, is MS thinking? nearby sharing over BT only? But i thought it's actually over wifi ad hoc? I actually thought i saw that mentioned somewhere? Is there any definitive source or answer on this?

Well, according to Microsoft, it can use both. So I don't know. I am not familiar with it. Sorry. What happens if you disable Bluetooth?

disabling BT will cause the computers not able to detect each other to initiate the nearby sharing.

This is so Fkin lame if MS implements nearby sharing only on BT. I know it can be done over wifi even if you are already connect to wifi by sharing the wifi connection as evidence by ability to share using the mobile hotspot feature (which is an absolute great feature a lot of time when you are using airplane inflight wifi allowing you to pay for just one connection fee but allow you to share that to your phone and your friends phone in next seat)

But this is beyond ridiculous if nearby sharing is only limited to BT. I was expecting that a lot of people would have experience with using this? Am I wrong in assuming a lot of people using it? the airdrop feature in Apples is very widely use. It's so convenient to be able to share files without even having to use a local wifi network. So anyone else use this nearby sharing and get significant higher speed than 2mbps?

One laptop has BT 4.1, the other 5.0. but regardless, isn't this supposed to be wifi ad hoc?

I am just surprised that this feature is not widely used by windows users.... Apples users use airdrop a lot... and from what I can tell, airdrop speed is basically at wifi speed between devices.

I connect over the same wifi network using my cellphone tethering.. The transfer speed is now up to 20mbps or 10x what i was getting before..

However, that is still sucky. The speed possible using a regular local network between my two laptop is around 300mbps so the nearby sharing speed of 20mbps is still far from what direct wifi transfer between the two laptops should be capable off.

Also, this need to first connect to a wifi network and set the network to private really defeat the whole purpose of nearby sharing, which is the ability to quickly share file between two devices without even the need for a local wifi network. Apples got this working so i don't see why MS is not making it work.

Its sad to see they add a great feature then just abandon the full implementation ;(
