The Trouble Shooters (TS) in Win10 are pretty good.

Make sure that Device Installation Settings are automatic:

Press the WinKey [ ] on your keyboard and type device installation - the top search result should get you to the settings

    Windows 10 - No Internet - No path forward or back - 100% stuck-devinstalsett-.png
    Windows 10 - No Internet - No path forward or back - 100% stuck-devinstalsett-b.png

Then try Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Network and Internet

Press the Advanced option on the initial TS dialog window
    then select Run as administrator

    Windows 10 - No Internet - No path forward or back - 100% stuck-mats-network-adapter.png

Your choice on Apply repairs automatically
    - I usually disable automatic repairs to see what the TS finds (you can then select the repair(s) to run)

You might want to run the Internet Connections TS and the HomeGroup TS to see what they find (also run as administrator if the option is available (not all TS offer elevation)

That's about all I have - good luck,

    Bill

    Project Hopeless update.

Only good news is I am getting to visit mom more often.

Other than that, well, it remains hopeless and I am really tired:
    • Installing the ASUS WHQL has no effect
    • the registry changes RedmondPie reg changes has no effect.
    • changed the lease expiry in the router - no effect.
    • Went to Settings/Recovery, to an "earlier version" of Windows, but it took me back to Windows 10 (the first install) - still no internet
    • Ran Settings/Restore a second time, and this time it said it was going to roll back to "Windows 8.1" , but when I clicked it m it was just kidding, and said it was not possible, as those files no longer exist.
    • I only saw the troubleshooting post above when I got home... Thanks Bill. Will try that one my next visit. I would expect at best, it should tell me my network drivers are not working properly under Windows 10. Nothing but new ones will fix that.

I have 28 days left to fix this. Will still look for Win 10 network/wireless cards. I contacted the seller of the one amazon one posted earlier - it does after all say Windows 10. But it also says "Automatic driver installation via Windows Update on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 and XP" ... but I have no internet connection. So unless the drivers are included , or can be downloaded and stored separately (it not automatically installed) it wont work. Luckily more googling got me here , so now I have those drivers . I am making that purchase now.

Failing that, and failing availability of the new drivers in 28 days, I may have to reformat the ASUS and install Windows 8.0 on it, maybe even Windows 7 would be a better choice.

    Mom says hi.

    Today I tried the following:
    • create a new user account . no change
    • searched regedit for that RG24 reference and deleted all the network profiles. It created a new clean one.. but still no connection
    • went through the troubleshooting - nothing found
    • reset the CGN3 modem to factory settings - no change
    • changed out the Ethernet cable
    • installed a new USB3-to-Ethernet adapter. with latest drivers. It behaved exactly like the network card - still no connection
    • rechecked the cable wiring to the CGN3 modem (with an intent to call Rogers to confirm they can see it)

And that's when the lightbulb went on a little brighter....

What's the one thing that is common to everything. The cable modem. Maybe it got fried somehow (even though I could access it and it showed normal activity, success, up/down transmission etc etc. Then again, what was with that short lease business . I concluded, maybe its the box. No harm to rule it out. So I marched off to Rogers, told them it was flackey (its on rental) and that I needed a new one. None in stock so for the extra two bucks I grabbed the CGN3ACR as I was not going to leave without one. Got served right away, but it took an hour and a few phone calls, as they insisted, by computer serial number match, that the modem I was returning was already returned - to which I said "really? you do realize your holding it in your hand -perhaps your records are incorrect?". They gave me the new modem.

INDEED THAT WAS IT! . IT ALL CAME TOGETHER WITH A NEW HITRON BOX.

I am now writing from her pc!

And Windows 10 is now activated.

simrick was on the right track spotting the lease problem, but who knew it was the box itself! We all just moved on to other troubleshooting ideas.

But many users are still having problems with those drivers per the posts on the Microsoft community forum. I am sure they are not cable/modem rated, but mine was.

A big thank to everyone for being a good sounding board, and being patient with me.

    Hi mom!

Sure, Win10 is the new kid on the block and we all forget to check the other equipment

    You are hilarious!

If you haven't already, add to simrick's reputation for being the first to identify the router as a possible cause.

To make it easy, here's a link to the thumbs up on simrick's post# 18

Good work, it was my pleasure suggesting everything but the router

    Glad you got it sorted.

Thanks Slartybart! But, what are the chances of the modem being marked as returned (and consequently "turned off"), at the same time W10 upgrade happened? LOL Murphy's Law....anything that CAN go wrong, Will....

If @Ztruker wouldn't have asked for that info, I would have never seen that lease problem!

Now that you mention it, there's a good possibility that the cable adapter was fine and the Svc provider just removed the device provisioning on their end when it was 'returned' the first time

Actually yesterday, I tracked the whole thing down further. Yes, it was the cable company all along.

But it was even more messed up that that, affecting two locations. What actually happened was this:
    • I upgraded my own service last week. When I returned that modem, unbeknownst to me , they recorded again my moms account. I came home, it worked so thought everything was fine. A few hours later I went to moms place. Everything there was good. I then upgrade to Windows 10 at moms place. At that time, while doing the upgrade, or perhaps as a result of all those reboots, the return kicked in and unbeknownst to me, deactivated moms modem. All lights stayed solid so there was no local indication anything was amiss other than the poor Windows 10 upgrade. 7 days of troubleshooting followed.
    • When I finally thought to return moms modem, the return problem was troubling to be sure, but the new modem worked at moms place so I was happy. Until I came home!!! you got it, no internet at home now, and I realized then it was because this time, they applied moms return to my account!
    • one more hour on the phone with the cable company to sort it all out!

Its all because I have authority to make changes on my moms account. Its never has been an issue all these years until this last upgrade to my account., when they applied changes to the wrong account, twice.

Life lesson. Silver lining - we all now have some great troubleshooting tips nicely organized in one thread :)

Interesting how ASUS says they are waiting for updated Realtek drivers for WIndows 10! Clearly it is now evident the Windows 8 drivers are just fine.

Perhaps new drivers will help the poor users who posted on the Microsoft Community with the same symptoms (as I doubt they have cable issues!) :
