    Need a gigabit switch

When I bring home my work laptop I have to use wireless because I don't have a spare wired network jack. The only one in the den is in use. The only one in the bedroom is in use.

When I use wireless it works flawlessly ... until I connect to work over a VPN. The VPN drops every minute or two and I have to reconnect it. But the VPN is rock solid when I plug into a wired network jack.

No ... I don't need a wifi extender. I have google services, and every cable box is a wireless access point. There are five of them in the house. I'm never more than six feet from one.

So I want to use wired networking exclusively.

To do that I'd like to "split" one of my wired jacks by using a switch. I have one but it runs at 100 Mbps. I need a 1000 Mbps switch. And I need two ports.

I don't know what to buy. I see units that are real cheap and others much higher.

    How do I choose?

I got this for use on a home network that does a pretty fair amount of wired streaming and data backups to network storage. Haven't had to touch it since it was cabled. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=10927

Here's one of the best on the market. A bit pricey but worth it!

I use a couple of these:

TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-Port Desktop Gigabit Ethernet Switch: Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories

Works well and there's 8 and 16 port versions available.

    Hi there

    @margrave55

Netgear GS205 has 4 ports for Lan from devices and one port for output into your lan Jack -- works absolutely flawlessly - and best bit is that it only costs 15 EUR or probably about 14 GBP in UK / 16 USD in USA at current rate of exchange

uses full duplex and I can say that performance is better than actually using individual LAN connections from your devices - probably due to internal optimisation of network signals (in full duplex mode) between the devices.

I have 2 NAS boxes connected to this switch (no wifi on my NAS boxes) and 2 laptops as like you I find the LAN is faster than wireless and more stable especially if on the 5GHZ signal you are a fair distance away from the transmitter.

    Highly recommended.

    No software set up needed

Unless you are really bonkers for speed 1Gb/s is perfecly good enough - the 10Gb/s and 1Tb/s boxes will cost significantly more and IMO is grossly overkill for a domestic residence.

    Cheers

Thanks jimbo, that'll do it. Amazon has it here for $15. Can't beat that.
