And if you're entrenched and/or locked into Outlook's other bells and whistles (calendar, task manager, etc), there's always eMClient (freeware up to 2 accounts)

The sun doesn't shine out of everything Microsoft produces. There is another, frequently more efficient, world out there.

How can you tell if an email was transmitted using TLS encryption - LuxSci but none of the emails I examined marched its suggested layouts.

- This other website offers an explanation of how to find out which TLS version you are running - How to check if Outlook is using TLS encryption - Paubox but I find their explanation quite confusing. Their suggested test site Secure Email is alright but it just reports that TLS was used without stating the version.

Perhaps you could also search this forum section for TLS 1.2.

But on the question about what you can do about the situation all the suggestions I found implied that it required an OS change rather than an Outlook change and that does not feel right.
- According to the rather old TLS 1.2 and older operating systems and outlook - EthicalHost, you need to work through the MS Registry edit procedure given in Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 as default secure protocols in WinHTTP in Windows {originally KB3140215) - MSSupport to raise your TLS to v1.2.
- I think that this 2022 thread also says that is what is needed - ISP blocking Outlook 2007 email in and out: Outdated TLS Protocol - MSAForum.
- I found lots of other suggestions when I searched for which version of TLS does Outlook 2007 use and they all looked similar.
- I do urge you to make a new system image before starting any Registry editing and to export the existing state of any Registry key before altering it. Tell me if you need explanations of these steps.

Absolutely not. I would suggest that the problem lies elsewhere other than with Thunderbird (maybe incorrect mail account setup?). That course of action should not have been necessary. Details of why necessary ??

I agree that Internet options [inet.cpl], Advanced, Security section lists Windows settings.
I agree that Outlook 2007 may or may not be able to take advantage of those overall Windows security settings.

These are my settings and I am able to send & receive email successfully using Outlook 2007 with my EMail ISP.

I suggest you turn off TLS 1.0, 1.1 and see how your Outlook behaves then.
- Perhaps your Outlook is annoying ionos because you have TLS 1.0, 1.1 checked so it feels free to use them. Perhaps Outlook will be quite happy to use 1.2 & ionos will then also be happy??????
I have not altered my SSL setting; perhaps I should.


I am resisting updating beyond Outlook 2007 because I have tried Outlook 2016 & 2021 and they are significantly inferior. There are poor elements to their Access & Excel as well but it's their Outlook user interface that is particularly awful.
I bought a copy of Office 2021 for £50.32 through ghacks just so I can understand people referring to it in forum posts. The link to their current deal [it keeps getting repeated] is shown in Microsoft Office 2021 Professional - Discount licenses - ElevenForum. I trust glasskuter's posts there.
I have to stay with MSOffice because I've added in significant VBA coding and I just do not want to have to start again learning some new scripting language.
Office 2007 works in Windows 11 as well. I can't remember if I have specifically tested Outlook 2007 in it. I'll do so soon.
I imagine that, one day, there might be other elements of Office 2007 that become unworkable and force me to change.

I've just checked Internet options on a computer that I know I have never done any setting up on. It also has all the SSL & TLS checkboxes clear except for the TLS1.2 one.
