Outlook & Gmail requires two-step verification

I'm running Win 10 Pro on an HP notebook with Office 365. I use Outlook to send and receive email from my gmail and yahoo email accounts.

Today I noticed that Outlook couldn't access gmail. I can access gmail with my browser and android phone no problem.

I contacted Microsoft Support and the first rep fixed the problem by generating an app password and two-step verification. I removed the two-step verification, and the problem reoccured.

I contacted Microsoft Support again and the rep could not get Outlook to send and receive gmail unless two-step verifciation was active. The two-step verification is a pain in the ass.

I'd like to find a way to continue using Outlook for gmail, but I don't want the hassle of two-step verifcation.

I think Microsoft and Google ought to fix this issue. I don't think you should need a smart phone to use Outlook.

Does anyone know of a solution that doesn't require two-step verification?

You probably received this notification from Google:

On 30 May, you may lose access to apps that are using less secure sign-in technology

To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. Learn more
What do you need to do? Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google.

(There's a link to send feedback to Google that works via 'Learn More' then 'this form').

I'm facing the same thing with my email client. Google now requires 2FA.

I got it working initially after access was blocked, but yesterday it failed again. I have now changed my registered email address in a couple of cases from gmail to a different email provider I use.

For me, this is goodbye, gmail as I scan my email accounts multiple times a day in a couple of seconds.

    Feedback fails:

Once 2FA is enabled surely all that you need to do is to create an app id password and use that in Outlook 2016 as your gmail password.

    See:

Step 2: Outlook 2016 (msi) and previous versions; Get an App password for Outlook

Outlook and 2-Step Verification for Gmail accounts - MSOutlook.info

I don't have Outlook 2016 but the app id password works fine for me in other apps.

Just to say that I've used an app id password for gmail in:

Bluemail (worked but not currently using it)

eMclient (Imports webmail from gmx account which in turn imports from gmail) the app id password works fine.

When you create an app id password the option to choose is something like "Mail on this Windows PC" or similar. I can't remember the exact wording. It doesn't mention specific clients that you might be using but it works anyway.

I think I'm using the latest version of Outlook, because I've got a subscription to Office 365.

So, If I want to use Outlook to manage my four email accounts, 2 gmail, & 2 yahoo, I've got to enable 2-step verification for the gmail accounts?

2-step verification is a PITA bigtime. It's the end of gmail for me if I can't find a fix.

I've been looking at protonmail. You've got to have a premium protonmail account to use with Outlook. Otherwise, it's website based access or smart phone app.

So here are two test email messages sent from two other accounts to gmail via GMX mail (GMX is importing Gmail)
    Screenshot is two windows.

eMclient importing mail from GMX via it's mail collector into gmail.
GMX importing gmail and accessed via a browser.

    Both messages arrive fine.

You just need to enable 2FA but use the generated app id passwords (one per gmail account) as your gmail passwords in outlook.

Messages should load fine. The only time you will see 2FA is if you sign in on another device or app where you haven't created an app id password.

I should point out that when you create app id's for your gmail accounts in Outlook you can name each ID.

So you could have an app id for gmail account 1 with the description Outlook Gmail 1

then another app id for the second gmail account with the description Outlook Gmail 2

You just use the app id passwords to auto sign in by using them in your Outlook gmail password save settings.
