It only works if you do not modify the OS to the point that it breaks it.

Is windows 10 as fast as windows 7? are there stable versions

I am running an i7-3630qm CPU, which is as fast as any current i5 mobile CPU.
    16Gb of ram
    2tb Samsung SSD
integrated i7 graphics, which was better than discrete nvidea GPU performance on my model notebook.
plus the nvidea heat has caused lots of these e6430 models to fail.
I know the learning curve is going to suck, but will I be happy with the performance.
I currently have zero performance issues and am used to an instant response from my pcs.
    I can not stand lag.
Does anyone have a stable version to recommend?

Windows 10 is nearly 8 years old (not the New Kid on the Block) any more.
As of 2020, there were a billion Windows 10 users - it would never have got to those levels if it was unstable.

The answer as always is to install latest version.

Regrettably, upgrades from Windows 7 have not always been the happiest experience, and you may well do better to do a clean install. However, before you do that, you need your original Windows 7 installation key.

If you don't have that, you must do an upgrade first to establish a digital licence.

The other important point is hardware - if your device is quite old, you may struggle to get suitable Windows 10 drivers.
There is no doubt Windows 10 runs much better on SSDs than HDDs, and also, you really need 8 GB RAM as a minimum.

Make sure you make an image backup of your pc before attempting any upgrade. Regular image backups are also your protection against failed updates but they really are quite rare for the official release versions - especially as Windows 10 is now effectively in security maintenance mode only (no real new features).

The other thing to bear in mind Windows 10 only has around just under 3 years official support left.

When I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 in August 2015 I felt completely lost at first. It took two weeks for me to start feeling as 'at home' in 10 as I was in 7.

In my experience every machine I've upgraded to 10 ran as well, if not better than it did with Windows 7.

Windows 10 has had more than 7 years of development. It is quite mature by now, you should use the latest version 22H2.

Like @bro67 stated, most people have stability problems because they "tweak" the OS with everything they find on the internet.

Things can go wrong so, as already mentioned, do a drive image before you start. Better be safe than sorry.

Once you have a drive image backup you can do a In place upgrade.
    - Let MCT create a Win 10 USB installation drive.
    - Under Win 7 run setup.exe to downgrade to Win 10 without losing your programs and data.

I still use Win 7 as my main OS. I do have a drive with Win 10 Pro on my desktop but I don't like it. What are the reasons to move to Win 10?

I have 3 Desktops with Win10 Pro, newest one from 2016 upgraded from Win8.1, no issues with the updates. Also have 7 Notebooks with Win10 Pro, 12", 13", 2 x 15" and 2 x 17", only one 15" was new, wife uses the 13", again no issues with the updates on them. None of these computers will properly run Win11 so I got a new Desktop and a new Notebook with Pro plus rehabbed a Desktop with Home. All my Desktops have 16GB RAM as does my Linux Mint Desktop. I never let someone throw a computer in the landfill until I've salvaged any usable parts, obviously I have been able to save some against the time someone will need one. [sell cheap or give away].

The latest version of Win10 is stable. MS can sometimes mess up with updates, but, these will be forced on you eventually if you choose to defer updates.

As a rule, I always wait a year after the FIRST release date before I install any OS as there WILL be problems and I can't have any downtime. I have just installed Win11 on one of my computers and it's quite good now. I refuse to be the BETA testers for corporations (hence the 1-year wait).

If you are that worried dual boot for a bit and see. You will need to turn off fast boot as that will cause problems as this doesn't shut down the computer ( it's a hibernation mode )
