    Windows 10

Can I install windows 10 on this system?

I'd like to upgrade to Windows 10. Is it possible to mould Windows 10 to a Windows 7 feel?

I know you can change the start menu on windows 10 and make it look like the 7 menu.

Hi, from the searchable Tutorial section - do have a look- see e.g.

Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free

and if you wish to clean install Win 10 and activate it using your genuine Win 7 key:
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

Blue text is clickable and may take you to other tutorials, including how to prepare an installation medium.

These should give you everything you need to install Win 10.

Before you do so do make some basic preparations:
    a. Create a full backup- just in case. Create a full disk image of what you have now to an external disk using e.g. Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper.

The routine and regular use of disk imaging is endlessly recommended here.

In this case it's of interest to you so, should you wish, you can always restore your Win 7 exactly as is at any time.
Note that after upgrading you have 10 days (by default) to roll back.. extendable to 60.

    b. Uninstall any 3rd party security software.
    c. Ensure you have at least 30Gb (more is really needed) free on C:
    d. Check your disk and file system- just in case.

You can clean install Win 10 on a spare disk if you wish, or upgrade your (backed up) Win 7.
It's possible you may lose one or more incompatible programs when upgrading.

    Win 7 -like appearance:
    a. Themes are available e.g. on deviantart and elsewhere.
    b. Open Shell is a free customisable start menu - excellent- which can emulate a Win 7 start menu and much more.
    c. It's possible to use Win 7 icons - various methods.
    d. Some are unhappy Win 7's Advanced Appearance Settings dialogue is missing. It is still possible to change the background of windows.

    Example:
    Windows 10-1.jpg
Note that is not done with a theme and the way I chose to do it does not change any system files.
    There I've used Vista icons.
Note the Orb - that is one feature of Open Shell start menu I've used.

There's some limited transparency with the Stardock Curtains theme I picked.

You can find screenshots of many more members' customisation in the Customisation section.

Windows 11 - the installer imposes particular hardware requirements. Somewhat older PCs can not be upgraded to Win 11 by default. Win 11 seems less readily customisable than Win 10.

TechSeven, do you know what edition of Windows 7 you currently have (Home, Ultimate, etc.)?

I wanted to make a suggestion but it would depend upon your Windows edition.

    Hi

Good to know. I do already have windows 7 running on my desktop.

I plan to leave that alone and install fresh w10 on a new ssd.

Well, my suggestion won't work on that edition of Windows, but along similar lines:

Once you get a bit more comfortable with Windows 10 and you are ready for the next shock to the system (Windows 11), you might consider installing Windows 11 as a secondary OS installation. That way you can switch back and forth without having to commit.

There are tutorials here on how you can install Windows to a virtual hard disk and set your system to show a menu choice to boot between it and your original OS. Once you get to that point we can help you with that. Just be aware that this is a possibility.

Win 7 is still being update. Single file with all updates - Simplix - Windows 7 Forums
I still use Win 7 as my main OS.

To install Win 10 on a dedicated SSD is the best you can do.
Use the Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First tutorial to generate (under Win 7) a GenuineTicket.xml file to activate Win 10 for the first time.
Don't forget to detach Win 7 drive (SATA or power cable) when you install Win 10 on the dedicated SSD or you may end with the boot manager in one drive and the OS on another.

As already mentioned you can tweak Win 10 to make it look as Win 7. Unfortunately, Win 10 works almost like Win 7 but it does has different paths to the applications. For example, to configure Win 10 you have some under Control Panel and some under Settings.
What programs / apps to use to tweak Win 10

I have a new ssd arriving in 2 days from now.

On current ssd I have Windows 7.

The problem i been having is when turning pc on, I get black screen. Had to restart many times and on the odd occasion (by hitting del few times) it loads to desktop and everything is good

The past hour I have been trying to get picture on the screen but nothing so far. I been restarting so many times and even with del button, nothing so far. I'll keep restarting until I get something.

So that brings me to the question, how will I install w10 on new ssd if I keep getting black screens?
