4/2022 My friend aborted a windows ten up date. Now what?

I act as a computer caretaker for them. They have an HP computer around a year old. It came in a box from Costco. AllI know is it is windows ten, about a year old.
During an update their power went down during a “don’t shut off your computer” screen. I don’t know if it runs right or not.

I’m going to be out on the farm today for something else. But I want to check it out.

How do check to see if it completed during restart, and re do it if necessary?

    Thanks in advance.

Despite all the ominous "do not switch off" warnings, Windows 10 is pretty good at handling update failures even in powercuts.

There is a high probability pc will just boot to status before update and just redownload it if you click updates.

Only one way to find out.....

As an aside, you should get your friends into habits of backing up critical data as a minimum before installing an update, or better still making a image backup using tool like Macrium Reflect Free or similar.

As Cereberus noted above, Windows 10 is surprisingly good at handling power failures in normal operations. Even if some of Windows own files are messed up, there's spare copies of many of them on the HD that it can automatically restore the operating versions of them.

However...based on my experience with a friends' computer store bought used Dell computer that he got tired of waiting for the Windows update to finish (I think it was the 20H2 to 21H1 upgrade/update), so he simply shut it off.

I spent many hours trying everything from repairing Windows from a USB stick and CD, to moving his HD into my computer (I have everything in slider bays) and doing everything possible to recover it, including replacing the boot tracks. Nothing worked. No matter what I did, Windows was too far gone to boot.

The only solution was to perform a clean installation of Windows. Fortunately, the directories on the drive and data files (300GB of downloaded movies, mostly) was intact and I managed to copy everything over to a spare drive of mine before reinstalling his HD again and doing a clean install. Only problem, there was no registration sticker on the computer case. I had to buy a full retail version from MS and download it.

Hopefully, it wasn't anything as severe as a version update. So there's a good possibility Windows will simply take a bit longer to boot up as it repairs itself. If not, doing a Windows 'repair' from the original installation CD should do the trick.

    Strictly IMHO -

Every computer should have a UPS.

Too late to help, but for Next Time...it probably wasn't necessary to buy it again. I have a Dell refurb that had Mint on it, and after getting the Windows ISO Download Tool and making a bootable USB stick, I restored the computer to W7Prox64 and it activated instantly--no need for the registration sticker.

The tool is sort of amazing--has dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of Dell models listed, although I believe you have to download/install the same Windows version as the Dell shipped with.

Yes, it is a great resource. It generates a link to download direct from Dell the original factory restore ISO for each specific model.

Provided your Dell was originally supplied by Dell with Windows pre-installed then it will have, embedded in the bios, an SLP marker (Windows 7) or a Dell OEM key (Windows 8 and above) that will activate your Windows once installed.
