Find a cheap legit Windows 7 key then either use that to install Windows 10 or install Windows 7 first then upgrade in place to Windows 10

Perhaps, but I think you missed my not so subtle sarcasm.

Win 10 is free for everyone now, so I'm guessing your trying to get Pro. Last I checked, Win 7 keys can still be used to get Win 10, and a Win 7 Pro x64 OS could still be purchased for as little as 50 usd.

Thank you all for your replies. Both these laptops are 32 bit and I suspect the maximum ram is 2Gbt so I am stuck with that. I do believe they will run on Win 10; I will test first.

The difficulty is choosing genuine software for a reasonable price. The prices vary from $10 to $20 to $100-$120 for professed Microsoft resellers. I did contact my local Microsoft help line to ask if they could provide an approved list of Microsoft resellers. I was politely told that apart from the official Microsoft store, they could not provide such information. Go figure!

There are so many websites that say their software is good but I am somewhat hesitant.

Please let me know if anyone has had a positive experience with a genuine Microsoft reseller.

    Kind regards
    Chris
Those laptops are too low spec to run Windows 10 realistically. Whilst technically it is possible, performance will be VERY slow to point of being virtually unusable. It is not worth i esting in a licence, more RAM and an zsSD to even attempt to make them run Windows 10 with any modicum of performance, especially if 32bit as CPU will be very low end.

For the above level of investment, you could buy a modern cheap emmc laptop which will far outperform those old devices.

In the end, you would be better off putting a light linux OS on old devices, to make them functionally useful for light surfing, emails and simple office-like functionality.
