I just upgraded my desktop PC from v1909 to v2004 and had two issues:

    1. Couldn't log on to Cortana with my usual MS account - Strange Cortana Login Issue
    2. PUA option turned off in Defender settings with the notice this setting is managed by your administrator. Solved by running this file available on the forum Default_allow_set_Windows_Defender_PUA_in_Windows_Security.reg

When I first did a trial in early June, there were a lot of things wrong with it, so I rolled back to 1909, and we didn't test again until the first part of September.

For us, it was "ready-enough"...meaning that the issues that were show stoppers for us in June had been fixed.

If you upgrade to 20H2, you are upgrading to 2010, which is the newest version.

2004 is the previous version, which is still supported until December of next year.

1909 is still supported until May of next year.

All are separate versions of Windows 10.

    Wu - 1909-2004-20h2

I am at 1909 and my WU panel is now offering for me to download/install the 2004 update. I was wondering if I just waited on 20H2 to show up on my WU panel if I could just download/install 20H2 from there - and it would automatically include download/install of the 2004 (20H1?) update. Would that work?
I do know that I need to do a system image backup prior to install.

It will download either 2004 (20H1), or 2010 (20H2)...they are different versions.

What you'll get depends on what you currently have installed, and what point your current version is at in the service lifecycle, which is 18 months of support for each version.

If you have 2004 already installed, 2010 will be a quick "patch" update.

Otherwise, it will be a "standard" update (somewhat long), just like going from 1909 to 2004.

    Upgrades can be skipped.
Windows 1511, 1607, 1703, etc. can be upgraded to 2004.

    1909 to 20H2

OK. My take from your replies is that I can continue to ignore the WU offer to use WU to upgrade my PC to 2004, and to wait until WU offers me 20H2. Once WU offers 20H2 I can let WU download/install 20H2 which will also take care of the 2004 upgrade, and after that my PC will be 20H2 including 2004.

I ended up doing the 1909 to 2004 jump yesterday because the target machine, for some odd reason related to device drivers, would simply NOT update to 2004. It did, however, successfully upgrade to 20H2 as I explain in a piece I wrote for Win10.Guru after working through that process: Where 1909 Failed, 20H2 Succeeds. You might find it an interesting read.
