    1909 to 2004 upgrade

W10 Home user on 1909 currently. Is 2004 upgrade now considered good to go? If I try to upgrade to 20H2, will that automatically also install 2004?

Hi, your question has been asked several times on tenforums, so do feel free to find those threads. E.g.
Is it Safe Now to Update to 2004?

2004 and updates have been known to cause problems for some users. Witness the threads on those issues in tenforums. No guarantees for a given configuration. It's an ongoing situation.

    How do you protect yourself?
    a. Have you been offered 2004 by Windows update? If not, leave it aside for now- assuming Windows Update is working.
    b. As ever, and so, so often recommended, make sure you have a current disk image of all Windows partitions before attempting the upgrade- or any major change.

Finally, yes, you can skip builds.

    Wu - 1909-2004-20h2

I almost understand your reply. I think you are saying that I can 'skip" the WU update from 1909 to 2004 because putting on the update of 20H2 will cause update 2004 to happen automatically as part of the 20H2 install. Is that correct? So, once 20H2 appears in WU, 20H2 will show as ready to download/install and the WU download/install window will no longer show update 2004?

    Essentially.

To add some context, Windows 10 2004 20H1 has been out since the end of May.

Most of the major issues have been resolved.

The only difference is that if you upgrade to 20H1 (current version) now, 20H2 is a quick install (similar to a patch).

If not, it will be a large upgrade, best handled by using the Media Creation Tool to get the ISO to create install media.

It's always prudent (IMO) to wait a while before installing a new Windows release (i.e. 20H2) to ensure that major issues are resolved before you dive in.

Regardless, make a full disk image backup before you upgrade to any new version, just in case something goes sideways.

The 20H2 iso is available for download (see News section), so that naturally 'includes' 2004. This is a step preceding 20H2 becoming available by Windows Update in place of 2004; presently you'd be offered 2004 by WU then the 20H2 enablement package. All downloads are available following the relevant article in the News section.

It's an evolving scenario following the pattern of 1903/1909.

Which now means that the 2004 (20H1) ISO is no longer available from Microsoft.

So if you need it, you'll need to check at Heidoc or TechBench.

Not exactly- all iso files are still available from MS, which is where the Heidoc tool gets them too. Only the current build is available using the MS Media Creation tool.

The usual interpretation of the ISO is "no longer available from Microsoft", is the Media Creation tool.

Some have been reticent about using the Heidoc iso downloader fearing it did not obtain said iso's from MS. Brink was reluctant to add it to the tutorial for a while being a 3rd party tool, and for another related reason. Point of interest here is what exactly is and is not available using the MS media creation tool in particular.

The included article from How-To Geek reviews both Heidoc and TechBench.

    That's why I included it.

I think what is available now, using the Media Creation tool, has been covered.
