    Win 10 preview 10074

Do "Insiders" need to do anything to get Win10 final installed?

I have been testing Win10 on two machines. On one machine I checked the "Stop Insider Builds" yesterday, the other is still set as Insider with Fast updates.

I also have three other computers (win 7 and Win8.1) with the "Ready for Win10" icons. No message or indication that Win10 is ready for install has been received on these machines, yet.

On the two computers that I am already running Win 10, do I need to do anything to set these up with the final Win10 version? Will Microsoft notify me (these don't have get Win10 icon) - or is it up to me to start the process as an Insider? Both Win10 installs show them as "activated".

    Hello CountryBumkin,

If you have updated to the latest 10240 build, then you are good to go. That's the same as retail.

So wait, isn't the final insider version (10240) different from the retail version? I thought that they had similarities but we would have to install the retail version in order for our copy to be considered as retail ?

It'll still be considered an Insiders build, but 10240 is basically the same as the retail.

If we do choose to do a clean install though will it activate?

It will if you reinstall and activate your original Windows 7/8.1, then upgrade to the free Windows 10.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading with free upgrade?

Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer or Media Creation Tool on an activated Windows 7 or 8.1 PC, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need a product key for re-activations on the same hardware. If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation. You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
