    Windows 10 product key?

I want to clean install Windows 10 on my HTPC and remain an insider. Will it ask for a product key? Can I use my 8.1 product key? I found an ISO that I am going to try so that I don't have to install 8.1 and 1,000 updates.

Is your HTPC running a test build of W10 already, or are you testing it on one machine & want to upgrade your HTPC to a W10?

Since you mentioned HTPC, I'm assuming your not using WMC, but if you were, W10 doesn't come with it (Just an FYI)

When I did a clean install of the W10 test build, it did prompt me for an product key. That being said, MS disabled activation for clean install on the test builds, as they are only allowing for upgrades from a previous build install.

Supposedly, if you have a machine that you have installed with a test build, that you should be able to do a clean install with the "general public release" and stay an insider.

If you have a machine that you want to upgrade to the free version (non insider), I would make sure it's a qualifying OS, & make sure it's legit activated. Do the inplace upgrade to W10, which to my understanding you should be able to create an iso. Once your system is upgrade to W10, then do the clean install.

The question that I'm not sure about is, will you receive a product key, or will MS automatically activate based on the hardware in your machine.

My main pc is has a legit copy of Windows 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10 RTM and I am still an insider. My HTPC is an OpenElec Kodi box. I want to expand it's capabilities so I want to put Windows back on it. I don't feel like fussing with Windows 8.1 on it so I want to just clean install Windows 10. I guess I'll try it and report back what happens.
