Is there a way to install the Home version of 10 Preview?

Do you have a PC that came with Windows 8.0 or 8.1 from the factory? Do an Upgrade on that PC and you'll get 10 Home.
The only device I have which is running Windows 8.1 Core (actually it's 8.1 with Bing but for this purpose I think it's equivalent) is my little tablet. This has a 32GB solid state drive and uses WIMBoot, so I'm expecting the upgrade to Windows 10 to be troublesome, and therefore was going to leave that one a while.

So I'm wondering if the following might work:
    1. Download 8.1 Core with the Media Creator
    2. Install in a VM with the key you mentioned
    3. Try the upgrade to 10 Preview - incidentally can I just run Setup from the ISO or is it more complex than that?

Yeah, I'd leave the tablet be.
There is no 8.1 Core with Media Center? Media Center can only be added to Pro. Did you mean 8.1 Core with Bing?
I'm not sure it will let you upgrade to 10 if it's not activated? Yes, running setup should do it.

I meant the Media Creation tool thing which lets you download 8.1 ISOs - I've probably got the name wrong as I'm not on my computer right now to look it up.

Media Creation Tool is it. I got you now. I see what you meant to say.

EDIT: I see what I did now. I misread Media Creator as Media Center.

So I have tried the following:
    1. Use an ISO downloaded using the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool
    2. Used this key to install Windows 8.1 in a VM (note that I didn't try to activate it):

    3. At this point I checked I was running Windows 8.1, not Pro
    4. Within Windows 8.1, I ran Setup using a Build 10130 ISO created using the ESD-to-ISO technique (I have a limited internet allowance - it's a reasonable amount but I can't download too many ISOs or in-place OS Upgrades in a month).

And I ended up running .... Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview. Ah well!

I did the online upgrade via the Insiders page. I wanted to test it out their way. I ended up going from 8.1 Core > 10 Home 10074 then to > 10122 > 10130 via Windows update. Sorry that didn't work for you running setup.exe? I would have thought it would get you the Home version. Did you delete the PID.txt file from the sources folder, if its there? My 10130 ISO that I downloaded from the Insider page has one that locks it into Pro. If you see a PID.txt file try deleting it, then try one more time and see if you get Home. Your doing it in a VM so that should make it a little easier to start over, I would think.

Brink posted these in another thread and I thought I'd pass them on.

    10162 Home = KTNPV-KTRK4-3RRR8-39X6W-W44T3

    10162 Pro = 8N67H-M3CY9-QT7C4-2TR7M-TXYCV

I don't know if they work in earlier builds.

Thanks for the keys. I did manage to have a go with a machine running 8.1 (not Pro) and installed by running setup.exe from the official 10161 ISO.

I did have some success, in that it installed 10 Home (with all the software from 8.1 carried over), but it wouldn't activate. The Home key you mentioned above doesn't activate either.

I'm hoping that I followed the right steps and the activation servers were/are busted somehow - I'll try again after the weekend.

I ran showkey on 10162 and noticed I had a new key. Typing the key into the Check Product Key option in showkey showed it as a Windows 10 Pre-Release Professional Retail key. Up until build 10130 Windows 10 was using windows 8.1 preview keys. You may need to clean install 10162 to use those keys I posted. The 10162 ISO is now available for download on the Insider page. That ISO can install Home or Pro depending on what key you enter.

    Thanks for this.
I've tried clean installing 10162 with the Home key and as you suggest it installs Home.
