I normally use live Mint with persistance of 4 GB and installed tools for file salvaging and with Gparted too. Just yesterda I tried Justubutu, it also comes with Gparted and some other tools.

Take a look at the Zorin distro. It is supposed to appeal to Windows users:

    Zorin OS - Home
Hey, thanks for sharing. Zorin looks really nice. I will read up on it a bit more.
I doubt I will install it anytime soon. I'm happy to have a Win 10 / Ubuntu system on my existing Desktop.
But I have been considering getting a laptop, and I noticed that many laptops are being sold without a preinstalled OS. Zorin might be a great choice in such a situation.

Hi CountMike, what do you mean by "persistence of 4 GB".

I have an amazing app on my phone called Drive Droid, which allows you to use your phone to boot any ISO/IMG. It even has its own repository of popular distros, and some recovery tools. Check it out if you haven't already.

Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi) from Windows | USB Pen Drive Linux and maybe some other ones can make, for lack of better words, Persistence part or file or whatchamacallit of the size of 4GB on the larger (16GB +) USB. It allows even a live version to retain downloaded and installed programs that would otherwise be lost when you sign out. Up to 4GB of course.
