Hello everybody. Sorry for inactivity, I had other issues which, fortunately, are now resolved.
As I was following Scramjet's steps, the icon popped up out of the blue. Just as I was downloading the tool. I guess I have no exact fix for this... I had done the following steps up to this point:

    - First I ran all optional updates. This installed KB3035583 although, after first reboot, no luck.
    - Then I tried the trick including running the batch file, again, no immediate results.
    - I ran the .bat trick a couple of times, slightly altering the method each time. But yet again, no immediate results.

I didn't even shut down properly on my last PC session, so today I was greeted with the "resuming windows" screen. After resuming my session, still no button, although a few minutes after coming back to this thread and downloading the tool that Scramjet recommended, it popped up. I didn't even run the thing but oh well.

I guess that leaves me with no clear fix, but either way, my problem is now resolved. With this in mind, I would like to thank all of you for your contributions. To those reading this thread and are in need of help, please try all the steps in bold that I talked about above. To find the "batch file trick" please follow this link:

Again, even though there was no certain or clear fix for my issue, I'd like to thank you all.

Great to see you got the icon on your taskbar Tamzin. You were like me.. I tried many fixes and finally the icon popped. It could have been a combination of several but all good now.

So, this is how I did it:
    1. Download and run this tool:
    2. uninstall KB3035583 and rebooted my computer
    3. Run again the previous tool, which was already downloaded in my computer (filename: WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab)
    4. Run the Windows Update. The previous update was found and installed.
    5. Rebooted my computer again.
    6. Checked again for updates - 2 new updates were found (I don't know why they were missing until now), I don't remember exactly what KB's... sorry about this
    7. Windows Update was asking for reboot so I rebooted my computer again
    8. Made sure that "Customer Experience Improvement Program" was set to "No". I really don't want this.
Note: I left # 8 as "yes" so I don't think that really matters.
If you don't get the icon after doing the steps 1-4 then continue with the others and then post here and I will post the rest of the script that was included that I didn't have to do ok.
I do think running the tool was the key to fix the bug in my system.

    good luck

I too have tried all the steps shown in the Microsoft Answers link. I've uninstalled the KBs (three times) and run all the scripts (making amendments as suggested but no icon.

I've run steps 1 to 3 and this found the update plus two others (one was for my printer). Done the reboot and run update again, it showed the printer update again? This installed Ok, again.

The support tool for windows update found an error with a registry key, which it fixed second time around.

    Still no icon though

Well I've resolved the issue, but in doing this have discovered another issue.
The reason I have been having problems is because I have a domain setup at home, this consists of a Windows 12 R2 server (setup as a file store) and 4 machines running Windows 8.1. This isn't a work thing I just wanted a backup regime and this works.

From the little I have read Microsoft are not giving the upgrade free to domains. I understand this as you will have large businesses getting the OS for free, but what do I do?

I suppose near the 29th I could remove each machine from the domain and do the download - But what do I do next? I suspect the server will reject my machines re-joining and want to set them up as new?

    Any suggestions please?

Glad you worked around it for now. Maybe MS will change their mind on domains created by non business people.
Good luck when you are ready to upgrade.

    Thank you.

I suppose its difficult for Microsoft to know which domains are business and which are home use. I've been told that I can download an iso but I might remove each from the domain, update and rejoin (though I will wait a few days in case of hiccups).

Well I tweaked the file how NathanRB did it, it went to an infinite loop. Kept on going round and round and round.
I left it for 1 hour...

    --One hour later...---

I came back and the loop still kept on going round and round.
