Allegedly AU version allows long filenames now but you have to enable it
Your program will not use long (path) names if it is hard coded not to.

The maximum file name length has not changed. The maximum length of path name has.

That is you can now have C:\Users\Hali\<50 characters>\<50 characters\<50 characters\<50 characters\<50 characters\<50 characters\<50 characters\(etc)\myfile.txt

You can't have C:\<500 million characters>.txt

The issue is old programs assume the old limit.

I use Squeezebox server (and I think Jimbo45 does too). In that program it is hard coded not to let the entire path exceed a certain number of characters - even though Windows now does.

NTFS (afaik) never had that restriction anyway.

OK... some updates.

I tried to get assistance from the Microsoft Community, but the Microsoft MVP who tried to help me was FIXATED on Norton, because I had it installed some time ago. Even though I told him REPEATEDLY that I completely uninstalled it, used the Norton Removal Tool, and had manually CLEANSED the registry after UNINSTALLING all Symantec software, he could not let go... kept asking me when it was done. Dates seemed very important to him. He was also fixated on Defender having the latest definitions. Of course it had the latest -- Windows 10 controls the update of it completely, not giving the user the opportunity to refuse updates.

I attempted this anniversary update 6 times now.

The 2nd to last time it failed, I got this error message at around the 60% progress mark on the 2nd (last) phase of the install:

Windows 10 to "10.1" update FAILS... no message... no clue-windows10_update_failed_first_boot.png

At this point, I had done the following:
1) Uninstalled my Avast! antivirus completely (before I had permanently disabled it - Windows warned me of no active anti-virus program, so I assumed I was OK).
2) Ran the windows update diagnostic tool - no errors.
3) Ran SFC /SCANNOW - no errors.
4) Ran DISM /online /cleanup-image [/scanhealth /checkhealth and /restorehealth separately] - no errors.
5) Disabled ALL non-Microsoft services
6) Ran the Windows Update Diagnostic, which did not find any errors.
7) Ran TaskManager to identify and stop any 3rd party running services.

Lastly, I discovered that there was a KB update that was not installed, and Windows just didn't seem to recognize that it needed to be installed. So I used WHDownloader and installed it. This was KB3172987. I repeated steps 1~7 above.

I tried the installation AGAIN. This time it failed at 71%.
Windows 10 to "10.1" update FAILS... no message... no clue-w10-update-fail_01.jpg
Windows 10 to "10.1" update FAILS... no message... no clue-w10-update-fail_02.jpg

The "STOP CODE" URL is completely useless. It doesn't tell you anything to help troubleshoot the problem.

Now, when I logged back in after Windows rolled back to the original Windows 10, I did NOT get an error message screen informing me of why the installation failed this time.

I'm... perplexed to say the least.

Does anyone know where I can find some kind of log about the last error encountered that caused the installation to abort? Event Viewer seems to be useless in this regard. I checked ALL nodes (application, system, setup, security) for the timing when that failure occurred, and there was nothing logged...

See my post 6. Did you check the installation error logs which should give some clue why the installation is failing? You need to look in the first 3 locations here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/win...and-event-logs

Strangely, I cannot get one of the KB updates to install... KB3172983. It's a cab file.

I used quotes around the packagepath parameter, just as I did with others... throws an Error: 2. An error occurred trying to open C:\downloads\KB3172983.cab ERROR: 0x80070002." "The system cannot find the file specified."

Apparently in the CBS log, it says it can't find the manifest file in the CAB file.

2016-09-11 13:46:46, Info CBS Failed to extract file update.mum from cabinet \\?\C:\downloads\KB3172983.cab [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

I searched the CAB file... no such file inside. Thanks, Microsoft. How is this CAB supposed to be installed without a manifest?? I checked the other CAB files and "update.mum" is inside.

Thank you for trying to help, Steve. But I looked around those files and it's way too technical and cryptic for me to understand...

I suggest you post the error files. I found the trick is to search for "error" towards the end of the file around the time when the installation failed.

I did just that. Searched for "ERROR". I don't see anything meaningful. I cannot post the whole log files. Some are just way too large...

Can you tell me what specifically I should look for?

What really concerns me is that this Microsoft MVP support rep has this set of KB files that he says should be installed. I've gotten all of them installed except for one, which is KB3172983. I downloaded the "stand alone" install file from the Microsoft Update Catalog. But there's no manifest inside the CAB file... so it won't install. And there's no "setup.exe" file in it as well. There are two EXE files, but attempting to run them throws errors.

I searched for errors around the timeframe of the installation failing. The hard stop was about 11:18am. No ERROR thrown around that time. Only thing I could find prior was this:

Other log files mentioned in that MSDN article weren't updated on 9/11, so they're not applicable. Mind you, I did run SFC /SCANNOW, to verify integrity... and it passed.

A FEW NOTES:

* When I installed, I opted NOT to do any updates. Just to install from the ISO. I read in numerous places that this is safer.
* I did not think to disconnect my Internet connection while this was running. Based on the "CBS Failed to find servicing stack directory in online store" error message, looked like it couldn't find something. But the messages that followed suggest that the installer process found what it needed offline... does that appear to be the case?

Your earlier post had some 0x80004005 errors which I had and solved by this method https://www.tenforums.com/installatio...x80004005.html

This is probably a long shot but from an admin command prompt run
bcdedit /export c:\temp\export (or another folder/file of your choice). If the command fails you may have the problem I had, else its something else.

Hi Steve, I ran this command and it completed successfully. Couldn't read the LOG file, because it's a binary. I ran the other bcdedit commands and everything seems fine.

My main concern right now is this KB3172983 update. I have a feeling I need it in order to complete the Windows 10 anniversary update, but it is not installed and I cannot get it installed with the standalone method. Windows doesn't seem to recognize that it's needed, as automatic update is not installing it.
