ADWCleaner is a tool to help ferret out the junk. Avast has been really good over the years, although they've had some difficulties recently with W10 updates. On the whole, their free AV is quite good. If you want to pay for a good AV, ESET NOD32 is high on the list.

Malwarebytes Antimalware is not an AV, it is an anti-malware and plays nice with AVs, giving an added layer of protection. The free version is an on-demand scanner, while the Pro (paid) version is "active". They also have an anti-ransomware in BETA right now, which will be rolled into their paid program when it's ready.

SuperAntiSpyware Free is also another "layer", and on-demand scanner. It gets rid of a lot of the cookies left behind from web browsing.

CryptoPrevent sets group policies that prevent viruses and malware from executing from the AppData locations. It has both free and paid versions.

    That's just my opinion.

Thanks for your opinion - that's all I ask. You folks are far better than me in choosing the best programs. I always pay attention to any opinions.

Hi Nisko, I agree with @simrick. Avast has had some problems with Windows 10. It has been a good AV in the past, but seems to have some issues with this Windows 10. I would expect they will fix their problems fairly quickly.

I use ESET Smart Security and am quite happy with it. I also have the paid version of Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. The free versions of those programs are very good too. They are just 'on demand' programs and you have to run them manually, no real time protection. That type of layered approach, IMO will give you the best protection. The very best protection is know what sites you are visiting and what you are downloading and from where. Always download from the Author's site where possible. Always do a 'custom' install where possible and look for any additions they want you to download with it. Uncheck those additional addons always. If you visit risky sites, no AV program can protect you. Those are just my opinions.

Thanks again. I'm always on the lookout for unwanted programs - but have occasionally missed one. This is great - already installed thanks to you.

Keep 'em coming folks. I'll consider anything from you that might help me in my computing experience. It doesn't have to be in the malware protection category.

Ok, @Nisko ! My 2-cents worth.... non-malware category. Very easy to use and powerful screen capture and editing tool (and free). Releases | Screenpresso

    Clean Install Windows 10

I'm still here - caretaker responsibilities have been heavy. The last posts are about me being about ready to clean install Windows 10. I have collected all my important programs and drivers - but haven't gotten any further than that. I'm wondering if there is a tutorial somewhere that explains step by step how to perform a clean install of Windows 10 after trying to install it over Windows 7 and had failures like mine. Also, another issue is how can I go back and forth between the clean install and the install I'm limping along with now. I've kept all the important notes from all the previous posts we've exchanged in a notebook. My primary drive now has only two partitions: one has Windows 10 installed over Windows 7. The other is the System Reserved partition. This is an SSD drive. My second drive only has one partition and is used for data only.
